I re-read the old threads about S/pidf and am embarrassed
to have posted my pedestrian observations, to which you kindly responded, to folks with your level of sophistication. I honestly had no idea about this SCSI and ADAT business. I've come this far, so I'll go a wee bit further and ask this, at which I hinted in my other post:

What is the point of mixing on a computer if you can, and have already, mixed on the Fostex?

I'll be lurking and awaiting any answer you have time to give. Feel free to expound if you want -- this swine will be grateful for any pearls you may wish to cast.

After that, I will banish myself to the newbie forum and remain there dutifully until I at least find the on/off switch on my unit!

Thanks,

Rob:) None of us is that sophisticated - this is all relative;)

The point about mixing on a computer is that it is easier, (all on a big screen, no stupid little buttons) and you have access to a much wider range of multi trackng software, plug ins, all the rest of it.

So why use a Fostex? Well in our case, it means we can quickly and easily take two tracks at a time off our band mixer, in the room where we play (rehearsal studio); its always reliable, stress free, simple to do. Then at leisure, in the room with PC and monitors, I can dump it all into n-Track and sort it out. Not better, not worse, just good for the set up we have. The side benefit of the VF80 is that rehearsing with the band, working parts out, we can use it like an old fashioned tape machine, play stuff back to see what works. Nothing to do with making recordings, just helping us work out arrangements. This is where the VF80 scores over the MR8 'cos you have, in effect, unlimited recording capacity.

Where the MR8 scores is tha it's much easier to transfer its contents to the PC, as you will have read.

I hope that answers your questions - the comment on the newbie forum says that if you have brand specific questions you're better off in the appropriate forum, so I'd suggest you stick around, ask away and benefit from the generosity of billisa, bd and his brood, gospel and all the rest here. Dont' mention religion:D

a deal is a deal

You got a deal, pardner. Thanks.

I'm assuming you have the VF-80 and I think it has better effects than the MR-8. Aside from that, mixing on your computer is so much easier for the reasons that Garry said and, automation, effects, and non-destructive editing. With the automation it is much easier to get all levels balanced. You can get a lot of free plugins on the net that are still much better than those on the VF-80. The VF-80 may have a way around this, but you can make changes in n-track and until you click 'save' the changes are not permanent.
This is where you need to be if you want to learn. There is not a question you can ask us that is too newbie. You want be a newbie long if you frequent this forum.
And by the way, we have church service here every Sunday afternoon at .......just kidding.

still hauntin'

Thanks, Gos, and praise the -- oops!

Yes, I have the VF 80. I think my problem is that I am anxious to get on the net with my recordings and it's a slow go. Much more complicated than I led myself to believe. Probably easy once you know how. I suspect all of this would have been easier if I had just bought cakewalk(s?) or something. But my computer is not in a good room for recording, and I don't want to move it. Plus I would have needed a better sound card anyway.

I do have another question about mp3's and wave files, but I'll post it in the newbie forum. Trust me, that's where it belongs!

Thanks again.

You can post it here. I researched setting up my pc for recording and it was a lot more complicated and a lot more expensive than just getting the MR-8 or something similar. From the time I got my MR-8 till the time I actually posted a song was approx. 3-4 months. Be patient and learn a little at a time. I learned by coming here, trial and error, and reading the manual (a little).

I agree with Garry and Gospel. No question is "inappropriate" here. Thats how we learn. Come on now, we have to have a sense of humour.
