The shielding is a bit better on the newer models and the mount is more stable. They sound the same. The current mount will fit the older models.

Whats the difference between all the sm7 models? (a,b,xxx)?

from what Iv read, they are pretty much the same...just upgraded wireing and such...

What's the SM7 good for? I'm thinking its a dynamic mic with a huge diaphragm? A dynamic with a condensor type sound? Am I right?

michael jackson recorded the vocals for the thriller album on an SM7.

one of the best rock vocal mics there is, also good for lots of other styles. also good for instruments, but great vocal mic, period. rockstar supernova used the sm7 when tracking all of the singers in the studio too.

just to give two obvious famous examples of the sm7.

Cheers,
Don

Also, I think it was on Metallica's "Some Kind of Monster" documentary....James used one for all his vocals as well...

It is the most useful mic I own. Works well on anything (never tried oh's).
If other mics aren't making it (ie: ribbons, tubes, condensers), it never fails to capture a clean usable vocal track.

I was seriously considering bidding on the same sm-7

congrats thajeremy

All of the vocals on Blood Sugar Sex Magik (RHCP) were done on an Sm7

haha, IMHO that's a bad example, to me Anthony's voice is impossible to add any depth or warmth to no matter how freakin hard the engineer must try. I like some of what he does, and have never met the guy, but you know, that's a voice I wouldn't want to have to record no matter what. like their guitar tones too, thin is in with those guys. gotta love flea though, the main reason to this day that I listen on occasion to their stuff, not that the other guys aren't great at what they do, but I just love flea's playing and creativity (and personality!)!

Cheers,
Don

All the early Megadeth vocals were done with an SM7.

I have one, it quickly became my go to mic for rock and metal vocals

They are also used for voice-overs.

You can add Wilco to that list as well. The SM7 is my most useful mic by far. It keeps getting chosen for vocals in shootouts over more expensive condensers. So much so that I bought a second one.

Aside from the usual mentions, I like the SM7 on floor toms and bass amps for keyboards.

I used one on the bass cab for the DSG CD I just finished.

@pohaku

But does Wilco use it on all of their albums? I was only able to find documentation that they used it on at least one of the Mermaid Avenue albums with Billy Bragg. And that source didn't specify whether it was used on all the vocal tracks or anything. Just wondering if you know if they used it on any other albums.

FWIW, the mic is pictured in the interior sleeve of Being There. I understand that it is also pictured in the Wilco film I am Trying to Break Your Heart (I haven't seen the film yet).
