Its a cover of Chavelle - Grab Thy Hand, pretty spot on too! Mix sounds great to me.

Sounds pretty damn good. What's the chain on the guitars?

Chain? Sorry, I'm still learning the lingo. I used Garageband for everything...*gasp!*. lol I know that's like a swearword around here

There are no swearwords to me. Whatever gets the results.

By chain, I just mean how'd you record the guitars? Did you mic amps? Or use modelers/sims?

Chain would refer to what did you record with? Strings, guitar, pedals, amp, mic, interface...I am curious as well. :D

Sounds great!

Ok then, I 4-tracked the guitars. 2 tracks panned all the way left and right, 2 almost all the way left and right. The first 2 are run through an interface into Podfarm using an amp simulating a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier (It's called "Dual Treadplate") The other 2 are run through the same thing except I changed up the bass, mids, tone, and drive settings. Each of the 4 tracks has a different EQ setting and they are all high-passed, but I can't recall where they are high-passed at the moment. (I made all my settings, and then created a preset.) I also added a very slight reverb. That's all I can remember right now.

The drums are midi from a program called EZ Drummer using the MetalHeads Plugin. Greg_L (Above me) says they sound bad and I believe him because every time I upload a song here, everyone says the drums are crap. I've been trying to figure out how to make my drums sound better with little success so maybe if you could elaborate a bit on why they sound bad, I could fix it. Thanks

Well, to me, they sound small, robotic, and too centered. They just don't have the power and presence and tone of real drums really recorded in a real room. I don't know how EZDrummer works, but look to vary the hits some. A real drummer doesn't whack exactly the same every single time. I'm pretty sure the drum samples included with these programming softwares are already pretty heavily processed, so maybe back off your own processing if you're doing it.

Ok cool, I dont have hardly any processing on them except or some slight eq, but I can vary the hits or sure

The cymbals throw it off for me. Good guitar tone and the kick and snare don't sound too bad though!

Cool song, never heard of it. I quickly checked it on Youtube, the quality sucked and I don't like the vocals. So I listened to your track again, I really like it. The hihats sound somewhat shrill and louder than the rest of the drums, they could be a bit softer. The guitars could have a more fat tone, but that would probably make it sound too different from the original. I was listening to Acid King so my ears where set to lots of fatness :p

I use superior drummer, Its basically the same as ezdrummer. The samples have a little processing on them already, but I end up doing a lot of eq and comping of my own. I've never used the metalheads expansion, but I know that some of thos expansions just dont sound good. The drumkit from hell is one that a lot of newcomers to home recording tend to use, and it flat just doesnt sound very good. Superior drummer is a far better set of samples, specifically the metal foundry for heavier types of music.

SO! Here come specifics that I hear need some adjusting.
The drum "performance" is a bit odd. In the intro for example, I hear ride and hi hats playing at the same time. I think for the most part you have the hats playing through the whole song. A drummer would be playing one cymbal at a time with the exception being accenting crashes. The hats also have way too much "sizzle". I dont know if you eq'ed them at all or if thats just how the metalheads hats are, but they need to be tamed! Cut some of those really high frequencies.

The snare is pretty good. Very compressed, but perfect for this type of music. The kick sounds like whacking a piece of paper with a pencil. There is definitely some low end in there, but you need to dip out some of the mids. I usually solo the kick, start with a wide "q" and just sweep the frequencies until you find one that sounds aweful. Then dip that frequency. I usually end up boosting some of the high end for more clarity but I do that in the mix, not solo'ed. You'll almost always end up over boosting the click when the kick is solo'ed.

The guitar sounds great though! And I couldn't hear the bass guitar getting out of hand at all. Well done. I think with a proper drum track this mix could sound great.

Thanks alot for the replies guys, Now I have a better idea on how to mix the drums for the future
