Just wondering how many of you heavily gate when using a drum machine, essentially taking the attack of the drum only, and adding tonality with outboard eq....in my case, I do this with toms, and use a tube eq...Is this normal? Before you ask, I use a Yamaha RX5 programmer, I know it's old, but it has individual outs for all drums, which is how I prefer to work, having lots of tracks. Maybe the reason I gate is to get rid of a poorer drum tone from this machine? I wouldn't have to do this with an updated machine, but again, lack of individual outs on newer models hold me back from an upgrade! Plus I kind of still like the kick from the RX5, and have cartidges for more choices. Any opinions?
