what is the difference between open and closed headphones. Like i want a pair of headphones for multitracking drums and other instruments. Does the open design affect this at all?

one thing is that often when you are recording vocals on a track, and you have "open" phones....you can hear the music faintly, if it is on pretty loud. with closed phones, you usually can't hear much/any music when it is soloed.

im not sure how well i understood that. I guess my main question is right now i use crappy cd player portable headphones for tracking, and i have to crank up the music extremely loud until i can actually hear the music over the live drums. I am in need of headphones that close off outside noise, so does being open and closed have anything to do with this? Also, i was looking at the senheiser RS65.

Yo Mentillian:

If you are using a sensitive vocal mic and wearing open cans to do your vocal, the music can bleed into the mic and/or cause feedback or other nasty things.

Closed cans prevent, to a certain degree, the feedback. They keep the music contained as you do the vocal.

Your options for cans are vast. Look around and listen to some if possible.

so how good of a job will those senheiser do of keeping the outside noise like drums out? Also can u recommend some headphone companies so i can go looking, cause headphones are definetely not my strong point, so if u coul give me some direction that would be cool. thanx

Yo Mentillian:

I have a pair of Direct Sound EXTREME Isolation cans; they fit very tight on the cabesa --- too tight really. However, they will block out most external sounds. You might look into those.

Otherwise, just use the search function here on BBS and browse around can comments. Then, there is always the "choice" to make.

The sennheiser RS65's are not closed headphones. They are circum-aural, meaning they go all around your ears, but are still considered "Open," because they are not designed to isolate you from the sound around you.

Do a little bit of reading at www.headphone.com. That's where I got my Sennheiser HD280's, and i'm very happy with them. Minimal leakage. People also like Sony 7506's and Beyer DT-250's.
