Hi all.

I intend to purchase a pair of high quality headphones (around 120 USD or more). I often record/rehearse (synths and samplers) for 6 hours straight so I need a pair that are comfortable to wear for long periods of time and won't kill my ears. Naturally they need to have an accurate sound as well. I will also be using them for vocalists.

Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks, E.

Looks like Hongteck REALLY likes those Sony MDR 7502's !
But I also recommend AKG K-270, great sealed cans.

The Sony's are great... BUT!... you state that you often rehearse for 6 hours at a time! This implies that ANY sealed set will make your ears sweat and begin to make your neck sore!

If you can find them (I know they were re-released within the last few years), I would recommend you try a set of the Sennheiser HD-414's! They are 'open air' so you can wear them for days at a time and they have absolutely divine sound! I used to use them ~25 years ago for ALL my studio work... I was elated when Sennheiser started making them again!

Just to prove I'm not too biased, I have a rack full of the SONY's too! I use them whenever it is critical to isolate the sound from a mic... but for direct to board work, it's Sennheisers all the way!

Good luck!...

No way,
With that much cash go for the Sennheiser HD25's for US$259 their the best head phones i have ever come across. Alos if you look around you can get them cheaper.

Hey E-man:

Give a listen to the Beyer 250 headset. I have two of them in my studio. It's winter now so your ears shouldn't sweat too much.

Nice field of sound and the price at Full Compass was about 231.00.

Happy Ear Comfort.

Finally retired my Superex Professional ST-Pro-B headphones (they still work after >30 years!) to their well deserved display space in the Smithsonian. I sure got my money's worth out of that set! Thanks to Hongteck. I went with the SONY MDR-7506. Finally a reasonably priced set of headphones that don't crap out when you feed them some bass at high volumes.

for my performers, i use akg 240s to minimize leakage into the mics. the 240s are truly wonderful headphones, but...for my own use at the board i prefer the sennheiser 414a mentioned in rockit's reply. i first ran into these while working at deep south studio in baton rouge back in the early 1970s. i can wear them for hours with no problem, and the sound of these little open-air wonders is phenomenal for the price. they are not pro gear, however, and do suffer from tinky little wiring, and poorly supported connections at the earpieces. i often use the 240s for mixing.
