Hey folks!

What should I be looking for in the first time buyer 1 set for everything headphone market.

Will be used for:
Monitoring while I play drums in live music settings
Checking stuff at the board when I run sound in live music settings
Working on my sequencer at the crib without disturbing folk
Headphones for the artist recording in studio applications
Everything you could use a headphone for except try to plug it into a 1/4 mic input on a Karaoke or something?

Open air, semi open, or closed?
100ohm, 600ohm, or other impedence?
What other specs should I be paying attention to?
Is $80 (discount MF or Mars or something)enough to pay?

Thanks, I'm expecting an earful (HA :D) of advice

I don't know the answers to all those questions, but I know I love my Sony MDR-7504 headphones better than several other more expensive sets I've tried. They were in the $80-$90 price range.

Sony MDR-7506

Do a search on this subject (look in the upper right corner for the "search" function)... this was discussed at length about 2 or 3 months ago.
The Sony MDR-7506 was the winner and still-reigning champ. They're the best you can get for under a hundred bucks. Pro-quality all the way.

Since you want to use them for recording vocals, you'll want closed-back to avoid bleed to the mic.

I just recently bought the Sony MDR-7506 (which are closed-back). I like them just fine, so I second that recommendation. An alternative might be AKG 240, although I'm not sure if there is a closed-back version of those; maybe only semi-closed.

Yeah, everyone here a few months back convinced me to get 7506's - and I certainly don't regret getting them. To be honest, I don't know what I'd do without them now!

What's the difference between the two Sony models? 7504 and 7506. Anybody know right off hand?

Give Koss a try, they sound good, their very efficiant, and they're cheap.

Yo Yo Yo:

Koss= a big loss.

Try some Beyer DT 250 headphones. Very nice sound field and they run about 130.00, maybe a bit less. It depends where you shop.

Try Full Compass for a comparison quote. They are usually the lowest.

Sweetwater Sound = a real vacuum run by arrogant vacuum heads.
