So, I just bought a pair of KRK KNS 8400's. I plan on recording, mixing and mastering with these headphones but, seeing as I don't have my audio interface or microphones yet to use them for recording, I decided to just plug them into my phone last night to see what they sounded like.

I found that with some songs I couldn't hear any vocals. With other songs I heard no kick drum or bass. However some songs were fine. Just to specify these are not songs I've recorded these are studio tracks by bands/DJs that I've listened to for years.

I'm very confused.

Sorry if this is a stupid complaint or something...

Dave.

You must by definition have a computer? Plug the phones into the headphone/line out of that, it WILL have one!
You might have to hack around in Win 7 to find the right feed for the internal soundcard (should be default to Hphone out tho') If you have Win 8 can't help!

You can then play a CD (remember those?) and you should find the reproduction very good. My HP i3 laptop out put sounds fine driving my Tannoy 5As. By the same token, having luxuriated with CD sound go to "tooob" and see how horrible and OTT some of that stuff is!

But do get a Steinberg UR22 asaycan or, if you want more inputs, the NI KA6.

Yeah, what Dave is saying is that what you heard on your phone may not be accurate versions of these songs you have heard before. As to vocals (or other parts) disappearring - its possible you are listening to a mono rendition of a stereo track that has phase issues (on purpose or not) with some parts. (One reason to always check your mix in mono).
You'll find plenty of threads here (mostly in the 'Mixing' section) about using headphones for mixing/mastering rather than monitors.
