I have a couple different sets of headphones and I've noticed they all sound extremely different.

Any recommendations on an affordable set that might give me the "truest" sound. They don't need to be sealed so any style will do.

Thanks

Grado. 125's, 225's -- Hard to go wrong with those.

THAT SAID: Don't think you're going to beat the laws of physics trying to mix with headphones on... It really doesn't work that way. But if you're looking for a pair for late-night editing and what not that actually sound nice, look to Grado every time.

Thanks for the advice... but what do you mean by beat the laws of physics?

Mixing with headphones... Both ears covered, not being able to distinguish phase relationships and low end content, etc., etc., etc., etc.

"Everything sounds great through headphones."

So true, I did a late night mix on headphones, the next day I put it over the speakers, it was so far out, not even close to what I thought. Loud headphones make everything sound full and big. Deceiving.

theres a reason most EFP/ENG guys use the Sony MDR7506...they sound great, little color, durable, comfortable and loud. and they fold up.

then theres the reason lots of engineers/audiophiles use German or Austrian 600k headphones..flat response
i use:
AKG 240DF for tracking alone, 7506's if theres drums in the room.
for mixdown i use my nearfields with room EQ, and a TC finalizer for the CD burn.

Don't use loud ones. The AKG 240 Mk IIs actually don't get loud enough for casual listening. They sound a bit lacking in bass response compared to sets designed for that purpose. I find that they're about as neutral as a good amp and speakers with all filters bypassed. But now that it's been brought up, I'll be wanting to test some more lest I deceive myself. :D
