They are a studio standard and are very nice. They don't take well to abuse though.

Do a search and you'll see that the 3 most common headphones are the Sony's you mention, Akg 240 and the Sennheiser Hd 280 pro. There are quite a few threads discussing the merits of each pair. I personally like the Sennheiser but find the AKg's and the Sony's very usable.

I'm with Wireneck on the Senn HD280 Pros. Take abuse pretty well too, and have user-replacable parts such as the cable and ear pads.

The Beyer sets all seem to take a beating quite happily too, and whilst they're not my favourites you can be sure they'll last.

Or the MoreMe's for about 30 bucks a pop.. Can't go wrong.

The AKG240 is another one that sounds good, but isn't very durable... one drop onto a wood or concrete floor and something on them will break. Also, they don't fit tightly on the melon... if you're moving your head around, they'll slide off or to one side. Other than that, they're fine. I'd be happy to sell you mine... they've only been dropped once... ;)

If you want a good, low cost, well balanced and comfortable headphone, check out the Sennheiser HD202. They sell for around $20 each, or 5 sets for $89 at :

To tell you the truth, I much prefer these Sennheiser HD202's to my AKG-240's... much more comfortable, more durable, and very good sounding for the $ IMHO. Plus, they stay on the old melon!

I like the Sennheisers also. They are tough, comfortable, sound good, and give great isolation.-Richie

My father has an AKG that I wish I had, they sound damn good. Those Sennheisers look pretty tempting, but I'm wondering how great they can be for only $20 each? I need headphone monitoring seeing as how I live in dorms =/

i think i have an average size mellon (but with more hair then most) and my akg240s sit very snugly. i wear them for 8 hours straight at work with no ear or head rub. highly recommended. i'm going to get the k271s when i get a few extra $$.

IronFlippy - the Senn HD202s aren't quite so hot on isolation - get a pair of Harvey's MoreMe headphones if you want the sound kept in and your drunken frats kept out! :)

Not knocking Harvey's more me's (I own 2 pairs) but if the set is for your own personal use I would definitely toss out the extra cash for something a little nicer.
I think they are great for passing out to bands to trash while they are tracking or whatever but I would not use them as my own personal set of cans.
With this said, they do exactly what Harvey has stated and for $20-30 you really can't ask for much more.
Just another opinion.

I agree with Wireneck. I own a couple pairs of More me's just for bands, but my 3 pairs of HD280's are the standard. Much more comfortable. Flippy- I don't know what Sennheisers you are talking about, but HD280's are $85-$100.-Richie

Like with all musical gear, no headphones are perfect for all uses. I wish the Senn 280s had a bit more bass (I add a bit in my phone mix), but I find these phones particularly great for tracking when I work alone. I'm primarily a guitarist, and when I'm recording, I'm walking around the room with a guitar on my shoulder, my DAW on one side and mics on the other. The 280s stay put. They are indeed comfortable, yet I've never worn phones with such a snug fit. I can bend over to adjust things, walk around, make coffee--and the 280s never shift an inch. That's a big deal for me. I suppose these cans might actually be too tight for larger heads, though. (No joke.)

The best general purpose cans are made by sennheiser. If you try out a few pairs then you will come to that conclusion as well, I think. For mixing with open style headphones, AKG 240DFs have served me well for years.

For cranking out closed headphones while tracking you could get sonys but senn HD497 are good too as well as anything that is both senn and a closed headphone design.

Honestly the only thing that I like sony headphones for is for DJing and that is because the coiled cord stays the hell out of my way.
