I sort of remember a few things about headphones like they've either got a closed back or open backs right? I forgot how this effects what their used for.

Anyways, I need to get some headphones for tracking, Drums, Guitar, Bass, Vocals, etc. and for mixing or more likely just listening to the mix when I wouldn't want to listen with monitors.

I don't need to be cheap on this, but I don't need to go over board too.

In addition to the heaphones, could you recommend a headphone amp? Anyone know what kind of wire/cable they use, so I can make extentions if need be?

Thanks

Open back headphones are usually more accurate, but they bleed easily (let sound in and out), making them useless for tracking near an open mic or a loud instrument.

The usual closed back phones are the Sony 7506, Sennheiser HD280s, AKG's, the Beyer DT250 or 770, Extreme Isolation phones, Metrophones, and Studio Kans. Open back phones are Grados, Koss, AKG240, and several others.

Most of the above phones are in the $100 or less range.

Most headphone amplifiers will drive any of the above phones well. Rane makes one of the best. Extension cords are usually made of very thin white and red wire, with a wrapped shield. White is Tip (Left), Red is Ring (Right), and Shield is a common ground for both earpieces.
