headphones/amps/distribution--basic setup

I got a newbie question:

I'm working up my home/hobby studio, transitioning over to recording more than one musician at a time (most of the stuff I've been doing so far has been me single-tracking it on my own) and looking to figure out the best headphones/amp/distribution setup. Don't need quality playback, just a reference track so multi-mic overdubs and the like can be accomplished.

Can anyone recommend:

1) cheap 'phones I can buy in bulk-5 for $100, that sort of thing? Preferably, ones that won't fall apart in two weeks...

2) a distribution/amp system for plugging in earphones away from the main mixer? I've been in a couple studios that have what appear to be standalone headphone amps and/or mixers. They were on short stands (about four foot tall) and could be placed in the center of the room, or where necessary. I haven't been able to find anything similar...most of the stuff that has turned up on google or ebay looks like rack mount. I want something I can run off the aux or earphone out, and have the musician(s) across the room (or in the next room). Again, budget is an issue.

Thanks in advance for the help.

MoreMe headphones...buy them direct from Harvey himself, or you can get the 5 for $120 deal from Mercenary.

The quality and flexibility of your headphone amp system is really going to depend on your needs and budget (imagine that). It sounds like you probably saw the Furman HDS-6 and HR-6.

Hey Furman. I use their little amp and the straight-through stations. Don't know if it's the best or cheapest out there. http://www.furmansound.com/product.php?div=01&id=HR-2

I do a main stereo mix for most of the players and an alt off the 2nd mix and phone2 on the Mackie if needed. That works out pretty well.

How do you feel about having the musicians do the mix though? Seems like it might not be as effective orproductive as it might first appear.
