My mixing board doesn't have a headphone jack, so if I'm multitracking I can't listen to the music on headphones (which is totally annoying)...is there a way I could do an alternative...

I was thinking I could hook a pre amp to a head phone and listen to it that way...would that work? Has anyone had problems like this in the past? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Yo He who casts big bolts of lightning:

What do you record the tracks with? It should have a can plug?

Or, play your tracks through a hi/fi system and use a can plug.

Or, get a plug/adapter and try the OUTS on your board.

There must be something easier than buying a new mixer.

Anything line level can work as a headphone out. If your sound card has two stereo quarter inch outputs you can get a 2mono/stereo plug and drive the headphone off of those. Its best to use low ohm'd headphones if you do this because it really doesnt drive that hard. But it does work.

So just use the outputs you are hooking your speakers to and switch between them.

So if I wanted could i just get a 1/4 connector hook it up to my headphones and put that into my mic preamp seeing as i have an open channel on my preamp that I will never use, and all i need is one pair of headphones.

I guess you could do it that way if you want it mono. It really might be worth for you to buy a headphone distributor, but that will do in the mean time. Its nto a very practical way but it will get the job done.

Thanks for the advice.

I have one question, though, what is a can plug?

Also, my machine is a Tascam/Teac 4 track recorder running into a Teac mixing board...I bought it use and it looks like it's from the early 80's...the outputs are all rca outputs.

One more thing...the quarter inch mic inputs are somewhat tricky...I have a mic with a stereo quarter inch and supposedly you need a quarter inch that's mono...supposedly I need these special wires that go from (xlr or stereo quarter inch) to quarter inches that have a two prong ...is anything I'm saying making sense because I am lost?
