In the midst of recording the other day, my 6 year old audio technicas (ATH-M40FS) started having problems. At first I thought the left side died, but turns out it's just much lower than the right side. Also seems to lack low-end but I may be imagining that.

The situation struck me as strange since the cable goes into the left side. I took the left cone apart thinking maybe I could re-solder something, but all the cables look fine (I think). Any recommendations? Is it time for a new pair?

The most likely problem is the cable, and the most likely place on the cable is the plug. Try wiggling it a little when it's plugged in and see if anything changes.-Richie

Fairly certain it's not the cable or jack. Did a fair share of wiggling, plugging/unplugging, and twisting and turning.

I spoke to someone who said maybe the voice coil is off-kilter meaning it can vibrate some, but not perfectly (hence some sound but not all sound). If this is true, he seemed to think it's not easily repairable. It's all a little foreign to me.

Never really thought I would, but I miss using these phones. Guess I grew accustomed to their sound. I'll probably go the same route again if I still can't repair.
