Headphone damage

I use isolation phones a lot (Directsound Extreme Isolations, if anyone's interested), for recording drums, guitars, even just practicing through the line out on my multi-effects. I do all of this at very present, but not overpowering volumes. Because they're isolation phones, am I doing damage to my hearing?

Yo He who Progs:

If you have trouble hearing these words on the screen, YES, you are hurting your ears.

There have been times when I did a jet move and shoved my cans off my ears because I made a mistake in volume or input or screwed up something else.

Your ears are priceless. Treat them well. If you think you have an ear problem, hey, see an MD! We can't do medical solutions here.

Yeah, I think I may have been inadvertently hurting my hearing because of too much headphone use. Right now my right ear is ringing constantly. The thing is, I just had my wisdom teeth removed, so that nerve may be causing it, or I may have "swimmer's ear" because of all the swimming my gym class has been doing.

You should really watch that.

You only have one set of ears.

Real helpful, huh?

Why not try some AKG240's. Ear fatigue is much less than Iso Hd-phones.

Why would isolation possibly hurt your ears?

If anything, its better because you can listen at lower volumes with ambient sound to contend with, and it blocks out loud instruments in the room.

Yo Prog:

I didn't want to tell you but I bought a pair of those "Extreme Isolation cans" and I wore them for about 20 minutes and they reshaped my head.

Too tight. [someone who sells them will respond and tell me I'm crazy] But, they were tight.

I have them decorating my studio perched upon one of my speakers -- stretching them I hope -- they are inferior cans compared to what I use and I use more than one brand so I'm a liberal.

Merry Christmas

I actually don't find them to be too tight, but they certainly are not good-sounding phones. That wasn't really the point, I just needed something to use while tracking drums. Nik D, I actually would have gone with those, but the Direct Sounds reduce the noise by two extra decibals. Plus, I couldn't find them in the catalog!
