Hey guys,

Setting up a studio here. We'll be moving into an as of yet undetermined house where we will be recording our next project. The house will be a rental and will not be "customizable". That said, I need help figuring a few things out.

Headphone Amp/Talkback Mix: We currently have a headphone amp and a 16 channel snake that we can run to any room in the house from our Digi 002 Protools equiped "control" room. I want us to be able to record anywhere; the kitchen, the bathroom, the garage...whatever. What I can't figure out is how to make a really nice talk back mix since we won't be able see crap that is going on in the recording room. I have been looking at the Mackie Big Knob. Is that sweet?

What do you guys use? I was also thinking of hooking up a camera and mounting it on a tripod somewhere in whatever room we are recording in and hooking that up to a little 13 in TV in the control room.

Anyway, what are some creative/cheap solutions. That Mackie thing looks sweet but it's a lot of $$$ for something that doesn't either make sound or help capture sound (i.e. not a fun purchase).

HELP!

hoyt. ive got the same deal as you... 002, seperate rooms, snakes, and the talkback deal. i was set on getting a big knob, but when i went to order, they're backordered till late july. so i went back to the drawing board and ended up getting a samson C-control (99.00 through Mf, SW, GC) im running it out to a small presonus HP4 for headphone mixes.

i have to say i like it... its a nice little desktop unit. while im sure it doesnt quite have the quality of the bigknob, and or, the presonus central station... at 100 bux, its a steal. the talk back section is easy to use, and, the majority of the key monitor in's and out's that the higher models boast are all there. the monitor switching is great, and provides easy access to different mixing references. eventually i'd like to get a big knob for the clean signal path, but for now, this is working out wonderfully.

good luck

Man, that's a tough one. The Presonus is $$$ especially if you get the remote which is what I would be most likely to do. The Mackie is much cheaper but does have 50 cables sticking out of the back of it. At least the Presonus can be tucked away and then one cord is run to the remote. Hmmmm...that's a tough one.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Anyone else have anything?

P-R-E-S-O-N-U-S... I know a guy with the Big Knob and he calls it a Big [CENSORED]. The central station has your headphone amp, talkback module, some pretty schveet D/A conversion...

And the remote, I guess (I didn't get the remote - It's right in front of me).

If 800 bucks fits in your budget, there's a new company outta B'ham Alabama (I believe) that is making a system called the HEAR system. It gives you 8 channels of routing, a master, a stereo mix master, AND a limiter. You get 4 stations which sit on mic stands. Each station has two stereo 1/4" outs for cans and an input as well (which I've never needed). The entire system connects with Cat 5. It doesn't get any easier or cheaper then that. The musicians will appreciate the customized mixes they create and you'll appreciate not having to drill huge holes in your wall. Avion makes a smokin' system that Cat 5's but it's quite a bit more expensive. I'd wait on the video until you can do that right.
