Another dangerous concoction from Bats Brew!

Man the whole thing is so well put together - tight performances, great sounds, and a solid mix. Guitars sound killer

Gonzo, I really like the rhythmic changes through out the song. The solo break down towards the end is some sweet playing. The grindy bass tone works well for this. I didn't care for the vocals but they do sit well within the mix. It is probably just a style thing but I would love to hear this with some chunkier guitars. What was the signal chain on those?

there's way more stuff on the radio i DON'T like, than do, so that's only fair!

the guitars are all direct via a palmer junction specialized DI box.
on my playback system, the guitar tracks have tons of bottom and chunk, but it may not translate well to all systems.

Brilliant stuff, excellent guitar work - solo at the 3 min mark was very impressive. Listened to your stuff here before, always impressed. No comments on themix becuase I'm just a guitarist not even a bad engineer! Great track though, mix sounds great to my ear.
 
Sounds good I think the toms might be to far apart. but thats jst me.

I'm always impressed by your material and this one is no different. The solo was my favorite part - blistering!

I agree with a previous poster on the vocals - they're just not doing it for me. The performance is good. It's the guitar/vocal combination or the melody, seems a bit too staccato (sp?) or somewhat out of sync with the rhythm. Note that is my personal taste, not a criticism of your writing which is alway nice and progressive...

This is not a songwriting forum, so let's get on to the mix.

Mix sounds good overall. The drums/guitars/vocals all balance nicely. Good tonal choices on the guitars. I wanted another rhythm guitar in the mix to fill out the mix a bit.

Sounds awesome man. The super-wide toms are a little distracting, but other than that no nits from me. :)

Has a southern/Black Crowes rhythmic feel.

yep, i agree, the toms are further out than i would have mixed, but since i used some pre-mixed loops to build this track in ACID, i kinda inherited the original panning scheme.

i still haven't tried it yet, but i might be able to build a fresh track with individual parts, fix the panning, and then fly that wav file into the finished mix and MAYBE it'll line up!!

i think i'm too scared to try it....

blistery solos, i like that, as long as it's not contagious.

it's cool on the vox...
i really did write it, to be....... no, not controversial, but to illicit a strong vibe.
so, i knew i was going to push some away from that styling, but hey, it's only rock and roll.

and it'd be so easy to add more guitars, you know.

well, you know, i'd hate to be the one to say whether or not it's a good idea to enjoy your favorite flavors while contemplating the worthiness of mic-less guitar tracking, or low end eq'ing, or eating crowe, or patronizing.....

Great recording and great performances. Everything sounds really tight. You've got a nice Hard/blues/rock sound here in a southern way. I can definitely hear Black Crowes.

they've never been any kind of influence, so it's kinda cool to hear this coming out....

Great song :), I like all the changes and heavy dissonance. It really buys that metal attitude without being cliched. I agree that the lead smokes. You always seem to have that knack for finding a tasteful and technical lead (definitely a skill that eludes me :mad: ).

I hear some popping when the toms are hitting (actually, the whole mix is a little pumpy). I think you may have overcompressed somewhere along the way. If I had to guess you may have been too aggressive with post-production. How hot is the RMS on the final track? I was listening to several songs, including one of my own mastered at -10RMS, and yours is MUCH louder than anything I've listened to this morning.

You might be able to skirt the popping/distortion issue by lowering the drums in the mix. I would try letting back on the mastering normalization first though to see if that pumpy feel disappears.

it's not really 'metal'.... you know...
it's just kinda aggressive...:D

popping and toms, i'm not hearing that...
but i do hear some obvious compression....
and..
i wasn't happy with the 'mastering' outcome...
so, i did a bunch of experiments this weekend, and found a scheme that backs off the compression quite a bit, but pushes the limiting harder, but my wav form of the final file, still has lots of peaks and valleys, so i'm not chopping off much at all.....
except for the chorus section ("how long......"), it's pretty dynamic on the mix....
i think it's more dialed in now, but still not as loud as commercial releases.

i may even go back and re-mix a few of my more recent 'finished' products, to get a lower raw mix peak, and more dynamics, and use the new mastering technique on them...
because i've decided- the overall volume thing, is a waste of time.
