Its time to replace the heads on my Yamaha Stage Customs, Im currently using Aquarian double thins on the top and the stock Yamahas on the bottom, the sound is ok, but not quite what Im looking for, I want a rich warm sound with a clear sustain, I havnt been able to achieve this with the current settup. Any personal experiences and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what I've done in the past.....

Though it will cost a little more, it will pay off in the long run. Start with the smalletst drum for (cost reasons) and narrow down your search to about 3-5 types of heads. Buy one of each and try then on that drum. Pick the one you like and fit the rest of your kit with the same head. Some extra benefits of doing this is that you'll have the other heads to try out if you're looking for a different sound 6 months down the line.

If this will be for recording only, don't get into the mindset that you have to use the exact same type of head for every drum.

Good luck!!

For a warm sustaining sound, you should definitely be looking for something medium or thin weight, single ply, and I think coated adds some warmth, though it could be psychological.

If you like Aquarians, and you don't play too hard, the Aquarian Satin Finish Texture Coateds work great. Balance those off with thin clear resonant heads, and there you go. I've used Evans Generras and Aquarian Double Thins too, but they are pretty much the opposite sound. I'm sure every drum manufacturer has something that will give you that sound to lesser or greater degrees...

Thanks for the input, What about Aquarian sigle ply coated batter with a clear single ply resonamt? I do hit hard, would the single ply batter withstand the punishment? Also, wit the resonant head slightly tighter than the batter, will this get me closer to the sound Im looking for? Ive been playing the drums thirty years, started on a set of old Slingerland jazz drums which I still own, so Im pretty much old school, Im just trying to modernise my sound, a lotta new gear to choose from nowa days.
Later.
