HD24-XR vs Presonus Digi-max LT

Hi all. I've probably asked this question in the past so if I have , forgive me! :o ..I have a friend's HD24 on borrow, it sounds good, even though I like the converters on the Digimax LT better. ( I'm using the converters on the Presonus going into the HD24 via lightpipe) I'm going to buy myself a HD24, but wondering, how much of a difference is between the two? ( HD24 and XR version ( sound wise )
I also have an OSA rack that I just got.. :D and plan to get some pres as budget allows. So....this is the question I really need answered, if possible:" Who have heard all three converters ( Presonus, The HD24, and the XR) and which one sound better? ( not higher sample rate, but just sonically, analog in/out )
Actually, what I'm really hoping is the XR version sound better, so I can just use the OSA front end and by-pass external converters all together! Conversion inside the XR and not having to use the lightpipe. Oh well.....thanks to anyone who will reply! ..... :cool:
 
I have an HD24 and I had an LT. I really can't say, because to do a valid comparison, I'd have to use the LT inserts into the HD24 which would be an unusual thing to do since a lightpipe is so much easier.

So without having done a direct comparison, I would guess they are about the same, I don't remember anything bad about the LT. I don't think the converters on either unit are gonna make or break you.
 
According to Jim Williamas at audio upgrades, the HD24 with the XR add on is actually a very nice converter. Take that for what it is worth:)

Hey xstatic, did Jim say this before or after, his upgrade?.. :cool:
 
Before. He actually told me that in the Alesis case that getting the upgrade from Alesis was about the same net result as having him mod the regular version.
 
The HD24XR uses the same converters as the Alesis Masterlink, which has a pretty good reputation for sound quality. I've recently upgraded my HD24 to the XR version, and I'm very happy with its sound. I have no experience with the Presonus, but I'd expect the XR converters to be the better choice.
