I have a HDR24 and I was wondering if there is a way to record onto virtual tracks in the same way that ProTools uses playlists. The HD24 is great for recording outside of my home studio, but I can't figure out how to do multiple takes and the manual says nothing of this. I want to be able to, say, record five takes of the full band with the full 24-tracks and then choose the best takes later and comp them with ProTools at home. What's the best way to do this and make sure that the tracks stay in sync? I use a click track btw.

Thanks,
Alex

The HD24 does not have virtual tracks.

But it could be solved anyway with a little creativity. Just record a mono guide track with the basic element of the song + click that people can follow. Copy and paste that track into as many new songs as you need, use it instead of click, and hit the record button.

All tracks in all the songs will now be synced because everyone's following the same guide track. Click could be used as well, but then you'd have to make absolutely sure everyone started on the same count from the beginning. A guide track with some elements from the song such as chord changes etc is easier.

Thanks for the advice. It will take some extra work and some extra time, but hopefully it will be worth it. I'll give it a shot.

I'm spoiled when I record at school with Pro Tools HD as I can record 100 takes of the same song and keep them all. Last quarter I did 92 takes of vocals and acoustic guitar in 4 hours!!!! Most where deleted eventually of course, but I ended up with about 12 harmony vocal takes that I couldn't decide on, so I kept them all! I just panned them all around and compressed them a bit as a group and it was a one man choir.

Anyways, thanks.
