Hi Guys, thanks to those who helped on my other questions.

My one and only question for today is......I am still not sure about whether to get a stand alone unit ( digital recorder, 4 track, etc etc) or put everything into the PC.

As you can see from my gear list I am all filled up with gigging gear.
I suppose I want only to buy something that I really need.
I have been gigging many years as a guitarist, vocalist and piano entertainer so I feel I would not need to always be re recording things due to mistakes, bad singing etc.
I am confident in getting it right musically most of the time.

I would probably make a good arrangment in the Roland RA 800 using Bass, drums, and maybe some background accompinement and record that as the main backing... then add acoustic guitar, lead guitar, vocals and maybe some harmonies.
Therefore I will not need to reord 8 tracks simultainiously...probably two at a time would be fine as long as I could hear whats already recorded.

I am lucky in that I can afford a mid range HD recorder but am hesitant to buy one in case the PC is the way to go.

I have to say I often find that computers can let you down at the worst possible moments.

The goal is to make good quality CDs that are good enough to sell to guests/punters, send to a record company, be played on local radio etc etc.

I know there is a limit to what can be done at home but I would like to get as close as I can.

Thanks for reading this somewhat long post but I need to get this decision over and done with ASAP.

Regards Alan Davidson

So can standalones.
Auto backup. Also Win XP lets you reset your computer to a previous date. Its worked for me.
In my opinion if you dont need portability go Computer. More options as far as Im concerned.

...Gee, I don't believe it. I realy readed all those word... :D
It's my only subjective oppinion, but I'll go PC with those. My point is it has bigger monitor to view your work. It's very helpfull when you do all those thing alone for quality... Hey, you're from Norway huh ? :) We got brutha moskus lives there... Most seen in Cakewalk Forum... check him out...
:)

I knew it had to be James who told Mr. Pianoman about me... :D

Anywho: I agree with James. Let the PC do the work. You'll need a decent spec'ed PC with a more or less great soundcard (don't go for a SB Live! ;) ). It's so easy to edit both audio and midi on a computer compared to a standalone unit. I really hate standalone HD-recorders. If you want some decent effects, push the "select-button" 837 and turn the joggle-wheel 8234 times. No thanks, sir...

But this is just my personal opinion...

Of course, dealing with computers is asking for troubble, but we're here for you! ;)

One man's humble opinion/question!

I thought about going the standalone all-in-the-box way myself, but decided against it. (Keep in mind I haven't purchased yet). The main reason had to do with the upgradability of standalone units. (Although this can be a problem with PCs it seemed to me that adding components etc. was at least possible with a PC). This could be a misperception on my part, (if it is please tell me), HDs could be upgradable and I am just misinformed. Tell us what you decide!
