Having trouble with my tape recorder... Help!

Hi, I'm trying to record an acoustic demo on an old run-of-the mill tape recorder and I'm having some trouble. When I go back and try to record over what I just recorded I can still hear what I just played in the background. This is not a multi-track recorder. What is the problem here? Thanks.
 
Could be a lot of things, from alignment trouble to dirty heads. Head cleaner and cotton swabs would be step one.
 
And after the thorough cleaning, a fresh unused tape wouldn't hurt either. ;)

Yes, could be a lot of things, including the above mentioned and also using a higher spec'd tape than what your current machine can properly erase. What type of machine are you using and what tape?
 
I'm using an old Califone tape recorder that I got from my old school. I was using a brand new Sony tape. I tried cleaning the heads but i can still hear the previous recording.

The next steps are head alignment and calibration...which might cost more then what the deck is worth and considering the age and obscureness factor of the make, that ain't much.

Analog can be a wonderful thing with the right format, manufacturer and availability of having content worth recording. You might be best to seek out something less obscure and more robust to work with. Something that runs @ 15 ips and is half track 1/4" stereo would be the way to go.
