well its plain and simple .. im just having some problems mixing songs of any genre

they re recorded pretty well ... i think

but i go to mix and nothing is really heard through in the mix

the kick drums gets COMPLETELY lost

the snare is there but barley

bass doesn't really have it's own place either

i dont know, should i EQ things differently???

like have the guitars take up the high end of the mix and then leave open space for the kick drum and bass guitar

maybe have snare somewhere in the middle?

if you were to make a chart that showed all the frequencies in a mix where would you typically find each instrument???

man i used to have some good articles about that type of stuff on my old computer, but all is lost unfortunately. i can't even remember what site i found them on. but it was right around the time i first stumbled upon Homerecording.com

are you using any compression on the kick and snare?

none at all .. i dont really know how to compress things, ive tried but never achieved results that gave me any difference

i still dont see why compression is a large factor in the studio

i wish i had some mp3's i could post but i dotn have anything that can convert ym .wav files

i dunno man, but from some of the stuff you've posted in the MP3 section, i'd say your mixes are pretty decent sounding to me. i think you did Comfortably Numb or something like that and i remember it was pretty good.

yeah that was a long time ago im suprised you remembered... things havent become better than that now. But anyways its 3:30 AM here so i think i ought to get to bed ill check in again tommarow, maybe find something to convert my files. Although ive been having trouble with that lightning MP3 site. i upload mp3's but they never send them to my e-mail.

Audacity is what I use for my mp3 conversions because-
  1. It's easy
  2. it's free
  3. It lets you specify the sample rate of the MP3 on the 'preferences' page
You'll need to download the LAME.dll encoder too and that's at a separate address --- it's linked on the Audacity page.

.

i use Cool Edit 2000, you should try Reaper nick, you can encode MP3 with it too. awesome program.

Hmm, over 3000 post and you are still asking these types of questions. Something is wrong with this picture. Good luck none the less.

sorry if my 3000 posts offended you .. that wasn't my intention

You're using too much reverb.

yeah maybe switch over to my "no reverb" philosophy for mixing.

Strip it down and start with the bass drum. Have a play with the eq (try not to use the same eq settings for the guitar as the vocals as these can swamp one another) and have a mess around with position of the instruments in the stereo field don't have eveything in the middle try and create space in your mix and good luck :) .
