Having a Nervous Breakdown

Oh, man, this sounds so good! Good sounding music, good recorded sound, good mix. Makes me want to stop doing the stuff I do, plug in and rock.

Bright sounding mix without going over the top - I like it. I also like the way the spoken telephone voice sits on top of the sung vocal at the end, but because their EQs are so different, each comes through clearly. But how about panning them slightly apart? I know, I know - I'm being traditional - I want to hear the two voices standing slightly apart, like they were on stage together.

Like Huey Lewis meets Talking Heads. Excellent.
 
Okay, I read through the other comments. I *like* that guitar sound - it just jumped out at me and claimed my heart. And the drums are loud, yeah, but they suit the song. Okay, down 1 dB LOL. I think the comments about the hihat are on - I think that was one of the things that contributed to my impression of the song being so bright.
 
Unique guitar sound, I like the horns, as real a sample as I've ever heard :D

And you've played them in a way where it sounds human, like their attacks are not all not starting exactly together ... nice. And the only reason I know for sure they are samples is because I don't think you could afford to hire a huge horn section like this of this quality. It's really realistic horn production.

The contrast between the hooking chorus vox effect, (mini megaphone ?), and the more wide open verse vox is great.

And I'm thinking that 'mini-megaphone' effect on the vocal can easily bury it in the mix, but the stereo placement of things generally and good overall seperation makes it stay jusssst out front.

Ya know ... I've had days like this :D .

Man those horns are arranged perfectly, reminds me of a Huey Lewis and The News type thing. Or that guy with the 'addicted to Love' thing going on ... with those slender chicks and all that.

Around 1:48, the guitar and the trumpets are honestly 'becoming one instrument' in places, in the center of the mix.

The 'almost middle eastern' guitar riff, the six note minor ascending scale that comes back down and goes around a few times near the outro ... brings back some memories of a band I played with in the early 90's that used that motif in a tune ... I played it on the viola with a bit of fuzz ...

I can understand all the words with no problem, very clear, no challenges although you 'do a lot' with the vocals ... great mixing.

It's hot, yeah, but not too hot. I know now from experience here at the Clinic that the cymbal I hear on the beat in the left stereo field in my 7506's will lose quite abit when listened to on ambient monitors. I don't have any monitors worth a damn at this time so I'm not going to use them.

Great work ! Thanks for entertaining us once again, kudos to yer padnah ! Buy him a round of lithium and valium on me ! Hell, one for the whole board !

dobro - Again I owe you thanks! Not once but twice, for the two posts. I think your mix comments are more of a testament to you liking the song so much that you forgot about the many foibles that the mix actually contain and I think I have been guilty of the same thing on many occasions listening to all the true quality stuff that is presented here for us to seriously critique and offer advice on, when in many cases, we like forget about that and just enjoy!:)

Studioviols - You indeed posses a special talent for analyzing music and I am in your debit for your careful critique and helpful advice.

The mix qualities, high-lites that you offered up should really go to both myself and equally to my friend and band-mate, Doug. He and I truly work as a team in all the aspects of a recording. From basic arrangement, to instrument selection, in eq and compression settings and especially in the stage of mix-down, we constantly bounce ideas off one another and try to come up with the best possible result that we can think of at the time of conception.

I have taken some liberties with the responses I have given out on this track that referred to "I" or "me" and I just wanted to set the record straight.

To everybody else - Thanks to anybody else who gives this a spin and chooses to drop some feedback our way. Both Doug and Myself thank you for indulging us and helping us to produce a better product.

This is very cool. I like the attitude. Nice job on the horns considering they aren't real. You placed them in there just right.
Could use some more bass and more bottom. Maybe that's been covered, didn't read the other comments.
 
Nice groove!
The horns definately add something to it.
Guitar is a bit too fuzzy to me too but I love the feel of this song.
Drums aren't to repetitive to me. It fits the tune and feel.
