Have trouble hearing a song as a whole?

As I've been recording over the last six months I feel like I've gotten better at paying attention to individual tracks, hearing what I like and don't like, coming up with ideas to fix things I don't like, figuring out if they worked, etc. But now it's sometimes hard to just take in a whole song without focusing on anything in particular. It seems like I don't listen to them the way I used to since I got into this.

Is this something you guys deal with all the time or is it a phase you eventually work through as you record more? Just wondering.

I'm the exact same way. But I think it's good. Just as a bass player listens to the bass in a song to get better at bass, a recording engineer listens to recording techniques to get better at recording.

I have the same problem. (or is it really a problem?)

When I have this problem...like I can't back away from a song to get a read on the entire mix...that's when it's time to go to bed. lol. Or take a break, or whatever. Quit and come back the next day. It usually sounds a little "newer" and different then.

Also, I'd moniter from different sources, if you aren't already. Burn a quick CD or tape of your mix and try it through your car stereo, or your home stereo, or through your television speakers.

...but usually, I just get up and stretch.
