It is something I am about to start working with I was hoping someone could shed a bit of light on this concept because I am going to attempt to run a whole show, music and lighting all generated from this protocol. So scientist if your reading give us a reply mate
I DL'd the demo and it looks to me like you will need to not only bring a computer onstage, but own one of the laundry list of compatable lighting devices. Look like it's not too fussy about the audio end of things - you can load SMF's and use GM compatable modules - but since I don't know much about it, the lighting part looks kinda scary.
If you're doing a very programmed type of music like a set of cover tunes it looks good. If you're planning to deviate even just a little bit from the planned set or incorporate any type of improvisation this may not be your best bet...
I've got a digitally controlled desk with a DMX link so I might be ok. I'm wondering if I might have to put the midi through a MOTU and then into the lighting desk lighting controller. All being well I'll start getting my head round it this week. I'm not sure if you programme the desk to adjust intensities and moving light perameters and the midi show call just send a note on message to the desk telling it to activate the cue, or if the show control sends all the perameter for moving lights, intensities, gobos and the rest in a stream of data. This will be something I will be working on for the next few months I'll keep you posted on my walk in the fog. Cheers for the link
I don't understand what a MOTU is going to do for you - maybe you could explain further. If the lighting desk controller has a midi in just plug a midi cable into that --- I suspect you will be controlling the lights with a combination of midi note ons and midi note offs with midi continuous controllers sliding the brightness/level of the lights themselves.
Now I have to spend even more money on crap I can't afford.
I really won't attempt to answer your problem, the complexity capability (Potential) of this system is enormous, and without seeing the excact setup, I could write 100,000 words of "What If's", and "Optionally's", and help to only confuse the hell out of you, me, and everyone else who reads it (Except ssscientist...He is immune to such things, I swear binary runs through his blood).
But please post results (and routing schematics would be a plus for any grand-scale problems you may encounter).
I have got to rig up focus lamps and programme the desk on Wednesday. The way the desk appears to work is by programming cues which can then be triggered via the midi connection, I'll let you know more soon.
