Has anyone used a USB interface without a computer?

I've got an Edirol UA-25 that I've used with a laptop and an NT3 stereo pair to record live, but I also have an iRiver H140 that can record. I'd love to be able to use the UA-25 as just a mic preamp & phantom power provider, and record directly to the line in on the iRiver, without hauling the PC along. Pro external mic preamps are pricey, it'd be nice to use what I already have.

I tried using an AC-DC adapter to supply the required 5 volts over the USB connection to the UA-25, but no dice...apparently the internal circuitry of the UA-25 requires a USB host connection too.

Anyone ever tried using one of those USB bridges (designed for copying files between two USB flash drives without a PC) and plugging in a USB audio interface to see if the audio interface responds? thanks!

I think you need software and hardware inbetween...the little MP3 player you have doesn't RUN it's own usb connection...whatever it's hooked up to does. Same goes with your Edirol. Your computer has to host it. Plus, I think you need software in there to record what you're playing...like Cubase or Logic or whatever. You can record to the thing, but only if you designate the MP3's harddrive as the location to save your audio in the software you're using.

Skip the USB, run from the analog out of the pre to the analog line in on the iRiver

Stuff don't work the way you're thinking....

You can use a MOTU 828mkII as a stand-alone mixer and as a recording interface when hooked to a computer (I know, I have one and chose it specifically for that reason).

But you can't just go from an interface to a hard drive. Period.

I know it's not *meant* to work this way,...

I'm trying to fool the UA-25 :-). When it's connected to a PC, I can use the interface as a standalone mic preamp, and the audio goes straight to the analog line out (it also goes through the A/D converter and gets sent along the USB cable to the PC, but I don't care about that for the moment).

I was hoping that just by connecting a 'fake' usb cable that provided 5V to the UA-25 (the USB connection is the only place the UA-25 gets its power) that I could still use the analog preamp and the analog line out. That didn't work. There's a "USB" light on the front of the unit that didn't light up, so my guess is that the UA-25 is looking for a USB host.

Those USB bridges have their own USB host chip, so I was hoping that the UA-25 would *think* it was plugged into a PC, if connected to a bridge.

Than try it and find out! That's the best way to figure out if it will or won't work...

I don't own a USB bridge, or else I certainly would have tried it. Anyone?
