has ayone had the experiance of making one? if so out of what?

I haven't made one personally, but I think you can find them in the Global Computer products catalog pre-made.

The only thing of concern after enclosing the box in a box would be cooling. It wouldn't take long for a sound (and heat) insulated box to warm up. Detrimental to hard drives, CPU, and power supply. If the box is near a wall or partition, you could vent (duct) through to draw air in and out with fans that would keep things ventilated.

Another option is to move the computer out of the recording area and run cables to it. Not sure how you are set for space or drilling duct holes in your walls..

I had a friend of mine building one for me, but it seems he's forgotten. The plan was to make it out of drywall with 2" styrofoam on the insides. The back left open and a sliding door on the front. Also was going to cut a few slots on the sides to help with air circulation.

Guess it will remain on the drawing board forever.

Emeric,

Much of the noise from your PC is coming from the rear. Leaving it wide open might not be a good choice. And drilling holes in the side would also let sound escape. Also, make sure it's setting on a very dense desk or you'll still get noise! I'd be interested in hearing how much it cuts back on noise if you ever get it finished!

Flavio Antonioli (the author of n-Track) claims to have built a switch that turns off all of the fans in his system. He says that running for 5 minutes or so at a time without fans works well for him. I'm not sure that I would in any way recommend this though!

emeric, I was thinking of building one with styrofoam on the inside and some sort of plastic on the outside. then i realised as slack said that most noise comes from the back. now i don't know what the hell to do. using a switch isn't an option for me, i use my bro's computer and he thinks it would fry it. is there any other way to controll the noise? anybody? i know it's bad to just record then remove the noise in mixing, but are there another option?

does anyone know where to buy extended monitor cables so you can stash your computer in a different room ? i know wireless keyboards and mice are pretty common.. i think that would be the best solution for most of us.. but then there is still the soundcard issue.. ahh dammit.. us homerec'ers cant win..

Running a monitor cable any more than a couple of metres starts to degrade the vision - it gets pretty fuzzy pretty quickly.

I think (but I have no idea as to where from) that you can get some sort of VGA amplifier that will let you go a lot further without losing heaps of quality.
