Built a studio from scratch and made a living recording bands?

I know, i know, its a bit of a fairytale question, but they're must be a couple of you guys out there doing this right?

I'm about to graduate high school, and I've got a couple of options for college/university,etc. A lot of what I've read on the topic says going to school to open a studio or be a recording engineer is like going to school to be a rock star, its just not worth it. But obviously my parents aren't too hot on the idea of me moving to a big city and looking for an internship at a real studio.

From what i gather a lot of the guys here have jobs (I was going to become a music teacher), and run studios on the side, not as their main source of income. I don't want to do this lol. I want to make a living doing what i want to do, and that is recording and producing music.

I know I've asked a couple of questions here, but I'm just looking for some peoples thoughts here, so I'm leaving it open ended on purpose.

Thanks in advance for anyone's input.

Let the discussion begin!

So does everyone here. Unless you somehow get a gig in a real studio, chances of making a living right out of school, doing "what you want to do", are at the least, unrealistic.

Let me put it this way....you'll have a better chance of making a living at Walfart or McDonalds than the recording music biz. Moving to a big city and trying to survive while looking for an "internship" is not only unrealistic, but downright naive. I don't mean to rain on your parade...but I believe you need to open your eyes to reality.
