Has anyone ever changed the 24V, 60mm fan on the tascam MS16?

I'm trying to source a quiet 60mm fan as a replacement for the stock one. I don't know whether the fans originally were much quieter but the noise of them is really intrusive but I'm having difficulty sourcing a 24V quiet fan.

Could I mod the machine to run a 12V fan and if so, what would I do?

Thanks
Al

How thick is the stock fan?

Chances are two low profile 12V computer case fans can be subbed in wired in series...Quieter.

I've just found his fan:

109R0624G4021 Sanyo Denki | Mouser

Reading the specs, 39dB doesn't sound very quiet. I once fitted some Scythe S-Flex fans to a Tascam MX2424 which were rated at 4dB I think....you couldn't tell whether the unit was on or not. Their low noise did limit the amount of air they could shift, but I found it was better to fit 2 or 3 of them in different places rather than to have one noisy fan.

Is it possible to fit like a variable resister (volume pot or similar) to a fan and control the speed (and usually the noise) of the fan from the pot? Or is this thinking too simplistic and prone to cause further problems?
The MS16 are going to be in the control room so I want them to be as quiet as they can.

Hey Sweets,

Our posts crossed.

The fan is a Panflo FBP-06B24L. Searching online gives dimensions of 60 x 60 x 32mm.

Oh wow...I was assuming it was a standard 120mm x 120mm fan.

So, yeah it would be a matter of finding a quieter replacement for that fan. If you can find the specs on the stock fan the two most important specs are the noise level and the air volume it moves, usually in cfm.

I'd have to look at what mouser/digikey/allied/jameco have available...

I think you could indeed use that DC to DC converter and then choose a quieter 12V fan. Note that fan you selected would be 19dB.

Get the info off the fan that's in there and find out it's noise and air volume rating.

Nice pic. That's a lotta VU meters.
