Flamingo!
I haven't recorded an orchestra yet. But i'm going to record one really soon. It is a fairly small orchestra. 6 violinists, 1 violist, 4 cellists, 1 bassist. I would like some tips on recording. But first, I want to know if anyone has used this mic placement technique!

Everyone waited with tense anticipation for the flea to fart.

WHAT!?! hahaha why..... What was that even for? Recording an amp and seeing which mic sounds best?

Yeah, I'm a little confused. Is this a joke? If so...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Cheers :)

I would use a x-y stereo mic technique, and do some test recordings to check for balance. You may need to move some of the instruments (the single viola and bass, I am guessing) to get them to balance in the track, or add a spot mic(s) to give you options when mixing.

LOL on the photos--doesn't EVERYBODY track that way?!?!

There's always a spoiler. :p

There's no RE-20 in that bunch. I'm surprised Henry hasn't dropped in yet.lol.

I'm assuming this is a joke and laughing pretty hard. Nice one!
On a more serious note, Hugh Robjohns from Sound On Sound has covered this pretty well as I recall.
