hey all

I was just wondering if anybody is using/liking multiple monitors when tracking and mixing? i could see it being very useful for programs like cool edit when you want to see the mixer and the different tracks at one time. Or can this even be done?

I have a lap top with a video card that i know allows for multiple monitors. the thing is i only have one monitor hook up.. what's goin on here? can i hook another monitor up via usb or something? i'm pretty sure i don't have a ditiatal monitor hook up either.

I stayed at Acclaim audio for awhile checking out their setup. (they make mostly video game music and sound FX).

They had 2-4 monitors set up. Mixers on one, track view on 2 and 3, and anything extra on the last....

It was definately cool, I don't know if it was so nessesary.
all MACS, too, by the way. and PROTOOLS

With a laptop, you already have one of the monitors right in front of you! You only need one more hookup to have 2 monitors.. :D

haha thanks strryder, i had noticed that!

For some reason the graphics card will not let me use the lap top monitor as a different monitor than the external monitor i'm using. it only allows me to display the same image on both. What gives? can this be done? this would be super cool if i could get this to work

Unless the notebook specs specifically say that it is dual vew, then the regular hookup is just for hooking a regular monitor up, not any sort of multi monitor desktop spanning...

Some dual graphics cards have one monitor port, and come with a cable that is basically a splitter. This may be the issue if your laptop does actually have dual support.

As for having dual monitors? It's probably one of the best things, visually, I did for my studio. I have a dedicated system. I don't need to worry about a great card, just one that gives dual support. I got a Matrox 450 16bit, and will never go back to a single monitor.

Track view on the left, mixers/effects/etc. on the right. Beautiful.

Blind Cowboy...

I just took the plunge a couple of weeks ago. To be honest, I'm still getting used to working this way. However, there is no doubt the extra screen real estate is a welcome addition.

Now I'm thinking I need two more so I can stack them vertically and get more height to go along with the extra width. :)
