I am probably about to buy one, and I was wondering what you thought about it before and after the mod. I hear they rock on guitar cabs, certain vocals, and as drum overheads. What do you think?

Beezoboy

Yup, absolutely cool mic. The straight body mic sounds a little better than the tapered body mic that I own.

Thanks. . . I trust your judgement VERY MUCH, but I have to admit I was already buying it before I asked you :P.

One (or two) last question(s) though; would you say that this mic is fairly close to a 77dx with the mod?? Thats just what "some have said" on the Champlain Webpage. I really don't care as long as it sounds good overall. Have you used this mic much before the mod? How were your results if so? Is this mic similar in sound to the 160? I realize the 160 has double ribbons.

Beez,

I've got 2 Steven Sank modded M260's.

I agree with Harvey. I like them a lot. I like them on guitar cabs, on acoustic, and for vocals. What kind of deal are you getting on your mic, if you don't mind me asking?

Harvey, does the VTB-1 work as well on the modified Beyer as on the
RCA 77DX?
I'm also very interested in getting either of them, RCA or Beyer, eventually.

Chris

Mr. Zekeman,

I am not sure I am getting a deal, but for $250. It will be about $365 I guess by the time I get the mod done. I'll be using the mic without the mod for a couple months until I get some substantial money or my tax return.

That's not a bad price Beez.

What kind of preamps are you running? You'll need plenty of gain for the 260.

It's VERY close to the sound of the 77DX, although the straight body mic is a lot closer that sound than the tapered body.

I bought the mic on ebay for $65, and you could hear that the ribbon was misaligned (low output, thin sound). I figured I would try to fix it myself, but then I learned of Stephan Sank's work.

I actually drove to his house in Albuqueque on the way to the L.A. AES show and watched him actually make the ribbon, and install it. It sounded very different from Mike River's modded straight body 260 (which I had with me), and we finally traced it down to the cloth behind the windscreen. We replaced that cloth with some original silk cloth used in the RCA 77DX, and it sounded almost identical to Mike's 260.

Here's a picture of Stephan running the ribbon thru the corrugating machine, and installing the ribbon:

Very cool. Thanks again. I can't wait to get this mic. Also, I think I am getting the straight body one. Looks very much like an M88 but with a bigger more round ball.

BeyerDynamics makes some nice mics. Did they just never catch on or something? Or is it that people are just now realizing them in the US?

Thanks very much Harvey

Beyer (or Beyerdynamic) microphones are WAY underated,
especially by the homerecording crowd.
The M88, Soundstar MKII, Soundstar X1N, and their ribbons can sound
terrific.

I love my Stephen Sank modded M260 (straight body) and my M88N as well!

I mainly use the M260 on loud electric guitar amps; I'm still waiting for someone to book a horn session!

The M88 gets used on backing vocals for live and a kick mic option in the studio. It's also cool for horns too, but again, still waiting for someone to book a horn session!

Of course, have the M201 too for a snare mic option.

So the Sank modded 260 can still handle high SPL like the original? Or does it become more fragile due to the new ribbon?

I got the mic but had to do "Ebay battle" to get it. The price went way up in the last 2 minutes. I was the high bidder for like 2 days and I had my heart set on it, then some yahoo tried steal it from me for 5 dollars over what I was going to get. Then another went higher, so finally I got mad and put the highest price I would go on it. Then some guy got 2 dollars over that, which I still can't understand because the min was set at $5. Then I went $5 more over that with about 15 secs to go and got it. Grrrr.... I hate that when people try and steal a deal in the last 2 minutes. Grrrr...

The good news is I should have about this time next week.

Very underrated mics. The 201 is my all time favorite mic for snare and toms (if I am micing them.) Great mics. the 88 is The Mic for R&B kick drums.
