I figured that you guys in the mic section could probably help me out on purchasing a harmony processor, like the Digitech vocalist performer. Are these units any good at what they do, if so which ones are the best buy

Many people are into them; even the Big people. I just can't get into it though.

Leave the harmony processor for the special effects dept.

Learn how to sing your own harmonies or find another singer who can do them for you. You'll end up with a more original sound and you'll be much happier with the results.

There's something just a bit un-natural about the harmony vocals that come out of the Vocalist Performer.
My 18 year old nephew, who has a good ear for music, said it best.... "it sounds like aliens singing back-up".
Nothing is sweeter than a good, natural harmony. You can figure out a harmony part quite easily by picking out the notes on a guitar or piano. It's really not that hard.
I'm sure there's some incredible sounding, high-priced, rack mount harmony processor that I've never heard of out there. But, the Digitech Vocalist unit I used was a novelty that wore off pretty quickly. I know that Digitech also makes a rack-mount version (I think it's called Workstation), but the end result was pretty much the same... kinda hoakey.

I agree Buck, I didn't like the sound either. The one I saw (admittedly a few years ago now) had "key" buttons that you pressed when changing notes. If you can do that, why not just sing the damn notes? I think these things have their place, but they're not ready to replace a person who can sing the notes.

"It sounds like aliens singing backup". Okay, now I'm interested. I reckon, if you can't get real aliens, then fake it with gear... Mind you, can aliens really sing? And even if they do, are they any good at it?

This is not just a joke. I'd like to do some songs with all the hokey, cheesy effects I've come across since getting involved in home recording. Serious. But I want to work with someone else on this. It's too good to do alone.

"Big People?" Does that make us the Little People? "Oh, indeed - top o' the marnin' to ye, Rec Eng. And is it a bit o' the harmony processor you'd be wantin', then?"

Hmmmm.... alien voices.
Got some ideas for a Dr. Demento type song?
BTW, "dobro" is also a Croatian word, meaning "I'm fine", when you're asked how you're doing.

"Many people are into them - even the Big people."

By Big people, I assumed you were referring to well-known recording artists or engineers, making home recordists, by contrast, Little people, which is also what the leprechauns of Ireland are sometimes called. Hence my sad bastard stereotypical "top o' the marnin, to ye" impersonation. Works better live.

dobro the munchkin

Buck - I've been hearing about Dr Demento for years, but never actually had the pleasure as yet.

I'm thinking of something not necessarily tongue in cheek, but it could be. Too much hokey reverb, alien backup vocals, parametric EQ that makes you sound like Rudy Vallee (sp?). Like somebody with too much makeup and tasteless clothes, but the whole thing hangs together in a kind of cheap, spectacular fashion.

Have you ever heard Portishead? Well, that not what I'm thinking about (LOL) but they're an example of what you can accomplish with the unusual. Mind you, if your singer's an angel and your main man's a techno genius, it helps, of course.

6 year bump, just to say that came off more like a pirate than an Irishman.

Check out the VoiceLive from TC Helicon. I believe if you inquire direct they will send you a demo CD.
I think by now he's probably set

I loved the Dr. Demento Show. Remember "Mammary Glands" or "Fishheads"? What ever happened to him? Haven't heard that guy since the mid-eighties. One of my heroes!

Harmonizers

Hi There, Everyone agrees the "Harmonizers" are a must in any studio; what one or ones are the best for the money; today and from the past; digital ofcoarse? Hopefully they are hands-on "Digitech" users amidst.
Sincerely, Mitch

I wouldn't use one as a door stop. They make a dandy frisby though. Just as they did 6 years ago. :D
