Harmony question

I'm not sure if you're meaning the chords to simply refer to a harmony note above the melody or the chords.
But if it's chords .... then the standard chords for this would be:
I........................ V ............... V7 .......... I
Happy Birthday to you .... Happy Birthday to you
..........I 7 ........... IV ........................ I........... V .. I
Happy Birthday Mr. President ...... Happy birthday to you ...

I see - thank you!

How would you recommend I learn these things? They are exactly the kind of things that I'm trying to learn. I'm a percussionist

generally this is covered in first quarter theory... rameaus generation principal ring a bell???? whether a chord gives a feeling of completeness or the need to move somewhere else??? tension and resolution????

Is this for a class or something? Or just for fun? There are lots of different variations to harmony (to any song). Dementedchord talked about resolution (and realizing resolution) - which is correct- and will work just fine if that’s the kind of thing you’re trying to go for (1, 4, 5, 7; while you’re at it you could write 120 4/4 1, 4, 5 and make a standard hit), but 1457 not always the absolute answer; tension can also be resolution (augmented, diminished, 9ths, suspended, etc), done in the right way.

It mostly comes down to if it sounds right to you and the listener. Just listen to any true to form classical for some really good examples of that or if you’re looking for some modern singers/composers listen to Anja Garbarek, Paul Haslinger, or if you’re looking for a mental breakdown analyze Puscifers’ vocal progressions…

But the examples given work just as well also… :)

epi... granted the extensions you mention (among other things) can be fun... but if they cant harmonize happy birthday 9th's etc are a bit much for now...

perhaps we need a theory heading????

For cryin' out loud, the candles have burned clear into the frosting!

Or maybe we need a thread that is specifically for experimental harmonizings of existing songs and see what people come up with… Just imagine it, augmented and suspended to Happy Birthday; it’d be like the Evil Adams Family version… :) hmmmmmm.......
