Which do you guys think is more capable of producing good sounds? I mostly work with metal playing dudes and due to outsidenoise/horrible acoustics of the room I work in, micing stuff just isnt cutting it..

I got a chance to use one of the older Pods last weekend and it suprised me but did sound a bit sterile/cold and lifeless..

my question is, are software modelers more capable nowadays than hardware ones? I am just trying to figure out which one I should pursue for a variety of good metal tones.. I dont particularly care if they IMITATE certain sounds well, that is, I could care less if it accurately sounds like such and such amp and such and such cabinet. :D

I think the Vox Tonelab is worth checking out. After tracking adding a little judicious software compression and room simulation can get you some excellent guitar sounds.

For metal get a V-AMP Pro.
Heavy, high gain stuff is it's strong point. It has pretty nice cleans, probably not the best at the mid gain stuff but for metal it works well.

Horses for courses. Check out the Boss GT-8 or the GNX-4, to my ears the Boss metal tones have way more punch than the PODxt tones. I like powerful tones than can move air, I never got that from my PODxt.

Short answer - get both. I don't record much direct, but even with miked tones, you can get some mileage out of some amp/cab sims at mixdown. Lately, I've been using cabinet impulses via the SIR convolution program &/or Voxengo Boogex to get some different sounds.

hahah wow, i think everyone posted a new item... I think i have more possible options now than before i posted this thread lol...

For heavy sounds, I love the Marshall JCM900 plug in Guitar Suite
It's free,too!

Simulanalog Guitar Suite is really suprisingly good freeware modeler.

Only two amp models ( JCM 900 and FenderTwin) but with Boss DS-1 and SD-1 simulations, enough for nice lead and rhythym metal sound and excellent cleans.
The only better Marshall simulation I played (JTM 800) is the one from Adrenalinn 2.1

Here's a speedmetal instrumental I did using nothing but Guitar Suite's JCM900 and another(not quite as good)modeling plugin called Cortex.I can't remember which part used what, but I believe most of it is Guitar Suite.

The Fractal Audio piece kills everything I've ever heard in sims. Go check it out and listen to the DIRECT samples, as in, no cabinet, no mic, just direct into a computer. You can hear speakers moving air. Its scary. 10 years from now we wont need amps anymore, and the Fractal is where its really starting.
