What do I need to use the sidechain insert on a hardware compressor?

Say I have a preamp, EQ, and compressor. I need to split the signal from the preamp so that the main signal is mic -> preamp -> compressor and the sidechain signal is mic -> preamp -> EQ -> compressor sidechain. Can I simply use an XLR cable that splits into two (one female XLR -> two male XLR)? Would that preserve the signal?

That should work. With rare exceptions, you can split a line-level signal coming out of one box and plug it into two different inputs. The line-level inputs on any equipment that's remotely modern should be very high impedance, relative to output impedances, such that it has no effect on the signal, even if you cut the input impedance in half.

The more typical way - at least traditionally - to split (or "mult") a signal would be through a half-normalled patchbay. A Y-cable works, though. Just make sure it's properly wired.

Note also that splitting may not work so well outside the typical line-level context, e.g. when dealing with microphone outputs or passive speaker inputs.

Yup, that's all you need is the Y cable to split the signal to the EQ. A mult on a patch bay is just a fancy Y cable.

We have written up this nifty little guide that you can feel free to peruse in your spare time: Sidechain
