King of Bling
a couple of months ago, "Hard2Hear" posted a tune that he was working on, and I made some crack about how it needed to be sung by a 12 year old girl, and Mike was cool enough to let my daughter (Jaimee) take a run at it.

BIG DISCLAIMER FOR HARD2HEAR - I pitch shifted the entire song, so if it sounds weird, it wasn't his fault, it was mine...but for some reason, Jaimee and Hard2Hear don't sing in the exact same register...LOL.

Also, he hasn't heard this yet...but I get so damned impatient when it comes to bragging on my daughter. YOU UNDERSTAND THAT, DON'T YOU LT.BOB? lol

I LOVE YOU ALL!!! hehehehehe

(and yes, she's still 12, LOL...birthday's in April)

I like it really well. Good song...... and a good singer. That would be one to be real proud of!

Vocal performance is good... (like there was any question aboot that.. :p) Strained at a couple parts, but it actually kind of fits the song, so it doesn't detract from anything.

I've got some distortion goin' on with the vocal. I dunno... somethin's clipping. But I'm gonna guess that that's the crappy codecs in WMP. Did you use a brickwall limiter (or any type of heavy limiting?) I've found that when you use limiting too much, it shows up as "distortion" in WMP (the later versions, that is).

Also, the vox is sitting a tiny bit too high in the mix. (I think a proud daddy might have something to do with that.. :p) You may want to sit the vocals down in the mix a little better. (yeah.. I know,... you want us to hear nothing except her voice.. ;) :D)

WATYF

WATYF said he thought the vocal was a little too high in the mix, but I think the vocals sit great in the mix....you could probably hear them fine if turned down, but I like them where they are......

it isn't the clearest vocal recording i've heard you do, but damn, who cares with a voice like that.......i don't know how to explain it other than they are a touch muddy, almost sounds like they were tracked with a 58 rather than a condensor

sounds good Jaimee and Hard2Hear........and Chris

Thanks guys... I think I know what happened on both counts. First, I shouldn't have tried to mix this tonight, because her little girl voice was actually piercing my ears, so I sucked all the mids out of the vocal. I'm just gonna' repost it with a flat vocal.

As for the level...lol. I had them lower, then some Jamal who will remain nameless told me to turn the vocal up. Well crap.

Anyway, I'll throw one more mix up sometime before I hit the rack. Thanks for listening.

I LOVE it man!

I really dig it when she bears down on the word "looks"!Chris this girl is gonna be a contender one day.12?!?!

She's got so much raw talent it's scary man.She definetly brought this song to life.Im downloading this for sure.

WOW is all I can say man.

Oh,I dont have a clue about the mix.I get lost in performances this good and the mix doesnt even matter. The mix soundsfine to me the way it is right now.

P.S. Excellent song Mike!

Jaimee's in the house!!!

Man Chris....she sings awfully well. She sure doesn't sound 12, that's for sure. I know you're proud and you should be....she has a voice that is far more mature than her years. She's gonna be really good. I only wish my daughter had started that young. She only started about 2 years ago so she's missed this learning time that Jaimee's going to get. I really hope we're all still in touch in about 5 years so I can hear how she's developed.
The vocals did not sound too loud to me at all. I wouldn't lower them much, if any. The sound is a bit distorted though....I don't know where that's from but if you can fix that, it would improve it>

Hey JAIMEE!!!! WELCOME TO HOMEREC!!! :D:D:D

Awwww...shucks, guys.

:D
:D

I put the mids back in her vocal. I don't really have anything else to "mix." This was slapped together with Mike's instrumental track (via mp3) and her vocal track. Maybe you guys can help me out.

The mix I got without vocals is fine...no distortion that I can hear...but it's pinned to the ceiling...so when I mix the vocal track with it, I have to drop the volume on that track, and the whole mix looks like a 2X4, except where she's singing...where it peaks up. Compression made it sound real mushy, so I tried to level it out (visually) with limiting. I honestly can't hear the mix or her vocal distorting...she clipped in one little spot that I didn't catch, but it was her bedtime, so no re-takes (or backups :( ). Anyway, if it's still screwed up, I'll just post a mix with a wav that looks funny, LOL. Looks aren't everything, right?

Thanks again for the kind words. She was amped to record tonight because she just finished auditioning for her little school talent show. She came out of the audition, and she said she didn't think she made it. I asked her why, and she commented that the judges weren't smiling at her during the audition. So she really wanted to sing tonight...

nobody tell her that I got a call from one of the judges tonight telling me that she was kinda' floored and wanted to know if Jaimee would add another number to the show. :D :D :D And yes, I know this is pathetically annoying, but if you've got kids, or ever WERE a kid, you should understand why I ramble. :D I'm just glad she's not on drugs......(yet)

HEY!

I'm d/l'ing this now. It'll probably take a half hour or so on this connection..but I'll hang around till I get it (it's almost 3AM!) :)

Hey mike... I hope you're cool with me posting this.

After getting comments about distortion, I finally took the headphones off and listened on the monitors, and it's there...dammit. I over limited...but that's an easy one.

If you can get over the pitch shifting...:D and the distortion :D and the "Chris doesn't know how to level a vocal," :D and the other 40 problems I dialed into your perfect mix, I'm sure you'll love it. LOL.

It's coming up on 2a.m. here, but I'll hang in there until you either flame me or drop off the BBS.

:D

BTW - Thanks a kabillion for letting her work on this. I tried to encourage her to use her own phrasing, and I didn't coach her any...so there's some stuff in there I wouldn't have done, but I think it helps her to do these things on her own. A most sincere thanks on this end, no matter what you think of it.

Oh...lol...and I just realized that she sang over 1/2 of your solo.

Umm... that can be shifted over to the right a bit.

:D

that's one I definitely should have caught, but she was just on a roll...rotflmao

chris-

posting it is just fine!:)

The more I listen, the more I like that tempo. I used to have a really BAD drummer, we started it slower and it always ended up that fast anyways:D

I enjoy hearing the phrasing differences. I have the hardest time with Mary because I have to tell her exactly how to do every single part, she never takes initiative. (by the way, you can hear her on my site now if you want, on 2 songs)

Jaimee has so much potential. One of the best, truly exciting female vocalists I have heard. You guys had just better visit our studios sometime and do this for real! We could do this song with BUOS plus me live backing...it would be fun. Keep her encouraged, and if you need anything, lemme know:).

I really like the first part of the break, very nice.

Great rock voice. just great. :) Makes me jealous.

I wasnt going to say anything about the solo, but yeah:D

Thats funny cause the solo is twice the length we actually do it with, so she came in where it normally would have been.

WHEW!!

LOL.

Hey man...thank you very much. I'm gonna' listen to Mary in the morning, b/c I've already pissed my wife off TOTALLY. :D :D

I don't know what to do with J. She loves performing so freaking much, but I don't wanna' be some kind of a stage parent.

Anyway, thanks for not making me delete this one...she'll get a kick out of it.

Anytime you need somebody to screw up anything musical for you, just ask. She loves this song, and she's VERY into contemporary Christian music too, so it was a pretty nice fit.

Take care,
Chris

It won't be long before she'll be auditioning for star search. Be proud, as I know you are.

'twas fabulous man. I can relate on the kids thing. Hell, its a good song too. :)
Cherish the moments...!

oh my god! that girl is not 12. get yourself a lawyer now!....oh yeah, you are one.

she has a great voice and it's gotten better from the last post!

can't wait to buy her first album. all my nieces and nephews will think it's cool that i know her dad.

BANG!!

a BIG ASS 5 Stars for Home recs first superstar!!!

.....man when this little girl puts out her first CD Im gonna buy 2. One for the house and one for the truck..... 'cause carrying around that disc, so heavy with talent, could wear my poor old ass arms out. When she pushes a little and grinds her voice she just kills me man. I kinda smile to myself when i hear this cause i know how proud you must be...... .....she's a musical fathers dream. Just fantastic Chris!
