Hard Time with Pro Audio 9

I imported a wav file into Cakewalk. I want to record a couple more tracks. But when I record, I dont hear the other tracks playing while recording. But I can stop the audio and playback the single track fine. What am i missing?

I tried to do a search but couldnt find anything.

What kind of sound card are you using? It's possible it doesn't support full-duplex operation, which is what being able to record and play back simultaneously is called. There's also a Cakewalk setting for enabling/disabling full-duplex operation if it's available.
 
This may not be you're problem but whenever this happens to me I look for the mute/solo buttons,recording late at night I'm not always on my toes.:o
 
Just a heads up, Im new to the computer recording realm and am trying to figure out if I want to go the Cakewalk or Cool Edit route. Ive downloaded a couple of demos and am seeing that Cool edit 2.0 is a lot easier to manage. And Im not having the same problems with Cakewalk.

Im using my stock soundcard on my HP Win98 system. I had a M-Audio card but it had S/PDIF on it so had to remove it. So Im in the process of getting a different one.

Anyone have any recommendations of a card that would work for me.

My system is a 900mhz HP on Win98se. I want one that has the RCA Ins and Outs.

Huh???? I'm really curious -- can you explain the reason you had to remove it?

I had an Akai DPS16 and used the M-Audio card for its S/PDIF I/Os. The card has no other inputs, and I have tried using regular RCA jacks on it and it doesnt seem to work.

So I need a card with the 2 sets of regular analog RCA I/O.

So in order to use the stock soundcard I had to remove the M-Audio and then Enable the onboard one.

Not so, at least not neccessarily. Many folks keep the onboard sound device or another consumer card like the SB Live coexisting on their machines. Sometimes it's a bit of a trick getting them to behave but it's usually doable.
 
The two cards just dont work together. I have spent hours trying. Messing around with the bias and drivers. Unistalling - reinstalling. Dont need both cards right now anyways.

Sure I tried the S/PDIF connection just to see if it would work. I posted a comment about it and had a couple responses going both ways, but found out that it doesnt.
