Just Killing Time
This is my band. I've mixed this song countless times and am in the process of
doing a lot of re-recording. Trying to come up with "the sound" for a 10/12 song
album. Please note that this is a work in progress!

Few things:
1) the pad at the start will be changed
2) the guitars will be re-recorded soon, just trying to get a general sound
3) these are MIDI drums, the real ones will be recorded in the next few months
4) there's a few vocal lines missing (badly recorded before, I'll be getting him
to do them again :D) or I still haven't edited them properly yet.
5) the vocals for the chorus will be double tracked when I've time to comp them

Other than that list , I'd like some opinions from fresh ears :)

Cheers, Phil

Well, it seems you're gonna change a lot of things so I don;t find myself confortable listening to something it's gonna change. Even if you replace the kick in your mix the entire song will be different because sounds don;t exist along. It's a relationship between the instruments and soundwaves so... I think I wait you to come with your final product and then give my opinions and suggestions. Luck.

Considering you're gonna change so much stuff, I feel I should comment about the song itself. The whole thing seems to be well-intentioned 80's hair metal, pretty well-crafted, but in my opinion a bit too repetitive. But most of all I find that the voice doesn't fit the style. It's simply too "nice". You some gut and chest to go with the pumping rythm. Pretty good guitar playing and hope you fix the rythm guitar sound.

I agree with everything Joey said up there.

Nice voice but not sounding ballsy enough for the tune. The instrument's sound like it can pull together as a nice tune once it's all finished up. But I'd like to hear it with the real drums put in. That's when you'll have a mix with a lot more feeling and I'll enjoy listening to it more. The guitar and bass sounding like it could even come up in parts.

Good luck, I want to hear the newer versions when they come out!

Good separation on the drums. I like the lead guitar. I agree with Joey about the vocals. Good job tho

Thanks to everyone who responded, a little constructive criticism is always
appreciated :)

I guess you're right, I'll keep ya posted when I fix that list. I just get a bit too
excited sometimes :D

Thank you very kindly :) I was comping his vocals and there's a good few
ballsy takes in there but I was a bit more keen on the softer ones. I get a
little too focused on the vocal on it's own. It would probably sit better in the
mix though. Guess I'll go back to my cave for more endless hours of editing

Cheers man. I think I was almost trying to cover up that guitar sound, which
is why it's so low. The style of music that it is, the guitars should be much
more up front but if there's one thing I'm constantly battling with my own
bands stuff, it's my own rig. Too thin or too bassy, lack of clarity, fizzy or
dull etc. etc.

I agree totally about the real drums though. They're less perfect and have
much more of a feel. Not to mention our drummer is very talented, and
replacing him with MIDI drums does not do him justice.

Thank you :D
