a week or two ago i asked aquestion about hard drives. one of the people on this forum said that the most popular is seagate over western digital. now, the specs say that the seagate drive should be quieter than the western digital drive, but after reading a buyers review on the product, he commented that his new seagate Serial ATA barracuda was noisier than his old Western Digital ATA. is this a reliable review, or would this have probably been a faulty product, and therefore this review can be ignored? has anybody used both brands and can they give me a good comparison? thanks alot!

Steve

Sorry, I can't give you a comparison review but I've got 4 each 80GB SATA Western Digitals in one of my machines...they're very quiet...I cant hear them over the case fans. I've been quite happy with them even after a year of service.

I have a Zalman fanless case on the way which should make this machine dead silent when I'm finished.

I just installed an 80G Seagate Barracuda, it is far far quieter than the old drives, one was an old (like 4 years) WD and one equally old one, I forget the brand. It is also quieter than the Maxtor that came with my HD24. In my PC, I already have quiet fans, so I can hear the Barracuda, but only when the case is open.

I recently got a Western Digital 120GB external drive connected via FireWire. I've been recording multitrack sessions directly to it and it's been working great.

Seagate has the longest warranty (5 yrs) which can't be beat by others. I've had a Seagate in my machine for the last 3 years, and it hasn't failed me yet.

I don't like Maxtor (one at home and at my office) because it is very loud.
Hitachi drives are nice and quiet and are the cheapest out of the HDDs (I'm assuming they have to in order to clear their reputation that the IBM "Deathstars" gave them).

Bottom line is that all HDD are susceptible to failure.

The funny thing is that Hitachi still kept the name 'Deskstar' on the newer HDDs. You would think they would at least try to get rid of the bad karma-bearing name!

I have a WD 10k Raptor that is nearly silent. Like Punkin said, the fan is the only sound I hear. I can't compare the 2 though, but I like the WD.

I used to have two Deathstars in my system. At first they were fairly quite but as the years passed they got progressively noisier. I have also done a fair amount of custom noise reduction in my system. I have recently replaced both Deathstars with an 80 gig and 120 gig Seagate Barracuda drives and my system has become whisper quite. Big drop in noise from the drives alone.
Yes, the Seagates are very quite.

I've never had a WD drive but the Seagates have a reputation for quiet drives that's well deserved.
I have 2 120GB Barracudas in my rig that are simply inaudible

Ditto. I was researching this about a year ago and decided to go with 2 120gb barracudas...couldn't be happier. Extremely quiet. Also have a WD 160 that died after about 6 month's use and a 3 year old WD 40gb that is still kicking so...YMMV.

Good luck
Jeff

As of right now I have both a Western Digital 80 gig SATA drive and a Maxtor 20 gig ATA drive. Neither of them make near enough noise for me to worry about.

great!
