I've got a motherboard that supports UDMA/100 IDE and I'm looking for the best 72000 RPM 20 GB out there. This will be my primary audio drive. So, which one is it, Maxtor? Oh it needs to come with an 80 cable so I can use the UDMA/100 feature. Thanks!

Yes, I definately recommend Maxtor. A 30GB can be had for $129 at your local Office Bitch.

Doesn't Maxtor have a fairly poor reputation for reliability? That's the impression I got from this board.

Any of the major brands of hard drives should be reliable. The quality of new hard drives right now is the best its ever been.

And in the unlikely event that you wind up with a dog, both Maxtor and WD have very good web-based RMA systems so you can get a bad drive replaced very quickly.

savew the DAY

the best drive is the IBM deskstar

that is .... done ..... the others are cool
but the IBM is a workhorse it kick serious ass

IBM Deskstars are not stable on highpoint ATA controllers. Went through this ordeal myself with two Deskstars. Take a look at http://www.storagereview.com and you'll see many complaints about IBM, and most of them will be from those with Abit motherboards (using the HPT366 controller). Personally, I blame IBM.

Of the 15 or so Maxtors I've got running around me none have failed yet. Though only two are used for audio. Very fast, and so far very reliable.

I've seen a total of 6 (six) Western Digital drives puke shit. I hate them with a most serious passion. I wish they'd go out of business. I wish that the earth would open up and swollow them whole. But then I know many people who have western digital drives and are quite pleased. But they could be idiots :) Another thing I hate about WD is that they've been stupidly hard to setup properly in the past.

Do not mix an IBM drive with a highpoint controller. Other than that, it probably doesn't matter what drive you buy. IBM drives are easy to get replaced (very easy in fact...and don't call the company you bought the drive from, just go directly to IBM, even if it was OEM), and I hear that Maxtor has a good exchange program though I have yet to use it.

Slackman - what's the specific problem with the Deskstar on the High Point Controller? I'm using a 7200 RPM ATA-100 Deskstar on a Abit BX-133 with High Point Controller. No problems so far (although it's only been a month). What exactly do you mean by, "they're not stable"?

dabluesman: DISCLAIMER!!! Every manufacturer will make a bad drive here and there....sometimes they'll make a whole bunch. If you buy a Maxtor and it fails, it's not my fault. Always be prepared. I'm sure you knew this, I just wanted to be clear.

dachay2tnr:

The problems seem to be data corruption and mysterious bad sectors. For instance, I had an IBM Deskstar on a BE6II and it ran fine for months. Then one day the lady I built the machine for comes in claiming that she can't boot windows. She complained that the drive was making a repetative noise when trying to load windows also. Sure as shit, some OS files were corrupt and it did make the "I can't seem to seek" noise of death. I ran scandisk and it reported MANY bad sectors.

I ran IBM's hard drive checker thing (from their website) and it claimed that there was a problem...some generic SMART problem. Can't remember what it was. Anyhow, I called IBM and got an RMA. Before I sent it back, however, I decided to do a low level format to clear all the data from the disk. After the format, just for shits and giggles, I decided to run a scandisk....NO BAD SECTORS. "Hmmm" I thought. I sent it back anyhow.

While it was away, I did some checking on dejanews and found several people complaining about IBM hard drives. I noticed a pattern...many of them were on highpoint controllers. I kinda wondered.....but didn't know what to make of it.

I got a replacement drive which I installed on the Highpoint controller again, despite my concerns. I mean, how could a controller be responsible for this type of problem? She took it home and two months later comes back in with the same problem. Same crappy noise and dead windows. What are the fucking odds right? So I send the drive back to IBM, and while I'm waiting for the replacement, I decide to do some more checking and this time I find a LOT of complaints from people about IBM and highpoint...some claiming data corruption, some claiming boot problems, plus a few other quirks.

Needless to say, I installed the replacement drive on the Intel controller. A little slower but she'll never notice. It's been a few months now and even though I keep my fingers crossed...I think it's ok.

The RAID controller is not the same as the HPT366...so maybe there's no problem. And even if there is, maybe you'll be fine. I mean it can't happen with EVERY drive and EVERY highpoint controller or...we'd hear more about it...or something. Take a look:
