does anyone know the fix for when windows millenium recognizes a 60gb hard as a 2 gb hard drive?
i threw out the paper that had the fix on it that came in the box and am currently waiting for a response from western digital. was hoping some of the good people in this forum would know some info about this.

yes, it is showing a the device as
"pri. master disk:60022mb,udma 5"

is this what you are talking about?

in windows explorer, if i right click on C:windows and go to properties, it comes up as a 2gb capacity and ive already used 1 gb.
all i have installed is windows millenium and sonar.

I'm not aware of a specific Windows ME problem with hard drives above 60GB, but let me know if there is one.

How did you partition the drive prior to the install? If you did not enable large disk support (FAT32), then your drive is formatted using FAT16, which has a maximum partition size of 2GB.

Just a quick guess. It's probably not right though, especially if you let the WinME installer partition and format the drive.

yeah, that's what I meant.

The only reference I can see is one relating to Windows 98.

Is it possible your using a windows 98 startup disk, with the older versions of FDISK and FORMAT on it?

That doesn't quite follow the logic.

Wait a minute, or are you using an old 95 boot disk and fdisking using fat 16? That might explain the 2GB?

Appears me and slack posted at the same time. Strange days.

actually, for some reason this time, i used the western digital disk that came with the drive instead of doing the usual fdisk way. i may have checked a wrong box.
i gues what i will do is fdisk it the way i normally do and then see what happens. im not going to lose anything luckily..... except for about an hour.
thanks everyone, ill get back to you.

what is going on here???

HELP!!!
does anyone know the proper way of formatting a 60gb western digital hard drive so i can run windows millenium on it?????

after i fdisk my 60 gb hard drive, then create a primary dos partition, i enable fat32. then i format my c: drive and then setup my c: drive with the windows millenium disk in the d: drive.
it does its thing, checks for errors, then i get this...
"setup cannot create files on your startup drive for windows millenium edition.
if you have hpfs or nt file system ( which i dont...) you need to create an MS-DOS partition. if you have lantastic server or superstor compression (which i dont...) disable it. "
i have only formatted 40gb HD's, nothing bigger than that.
am i doing something wrong???

run FDISK and select option 4, view patition information. What does it say?

Man, windows 9x installers are so raggy sometimes. You could try deleting all the partition information from the drive and run the Windows ME setup and see if it'll partition and format the drive for you.

I bet you that disk you used that came with the WD drive has messed it up. Try what slack says, as well do an FDISK /MBR (from your boot floppy, you are using a boot floppy?)after deleting your partitions, just for the heck of it. The WD disk may have installed some wonky disk manager. Actually before trying the FDISK /MBR, stick that WD disk back in and see if there are uninstall options (assuming it was ever installed). FDISK /MBR can ruin a hard drive, but I've never had it happen to me.

Some info from WD's site:
