My signal chain is :Mic>Pre>Reel to reel recorder.
So there is both the pre's meters and the recorders meters I have to adjust.
It's hard to get them both at a place where my accoustic sounds good when played back. At first I tried getting really close to the mic at the 12th fret about 6" away. I adjusted the pre's levels, but to make my recorders meters not clip, I had to turn down the recorders level way down, so it was barely turned at all. Even though I was getting a good reading on both meters now, it sounded far off and sucky. Is this because I had the recorders input so low, even though it's meters were reading well?
Oh, and I noticed that when I really really backed off the mics, and positioned them more as if I were trying to record the room too, I was able to really turn up my pre and recorders levels and not clip, and now it sounded great! Warm, full, and crisp. Anyone like me have better luck recording far away from the mics than close up?
Did that make sense?......Hope so......thanks!
