"The Payment (werewolf song)" - a classic horror story re-told :D

story:
it's a little ditty about 2 brothers and a lycanthrope.......

it's loosely based on the original wolfman movie, the one where larry talbot gets bitten by the werewolf, and he see's the pentagram in his hand; he knows he's phucked, so he goes to the old gypsy woman who knows about these things, to find a cure, and she basically tells him the only thing for him to do, is to kill himself......
what a bum deal.

anyway, these 2 brothers have been partying all night, drunk as skunks, and one of them staggers out into the moor, and proceeds to meets his maker.

the remaining brother wants revenge, but has sobered up now, and has figured out that he'd better get some kind of ammunition...

....so he goes to see the gypsy-witch, to get some aconite (wolfsbane) and a spell here and a prayer there, and believes that he's well prepared, and he goes out to the moor to get his revenge.

but that's not what he gets......

“The Payment”
Written by RF Gilliland

Nightime, on the moor
drank up all the mead
mist is in the air
full moon, did the deed.

never saw the evil...
that poor ole son of a bitch
felt the claws that gripped his throat
yeah, he was dead without a twitch.

"it's your brother down on the moor,
with his head down at his feet!"

drink the aconite, tonight
toast the witches curse
pray to whoever you believe in
to pass over you the worst

it's your brother on the moor,
with his head down at his feet
and the debt has not been paid in full
will you, your maker, meet?

run into the moor
and see the evil eye
upon you, cast a glance,
and the payment, it is nigh.

The idea is cool, and I love the energy in the song. The lyrics are pretty cool, and the story is fun, but the mix is horrible. The drum mix is very odd. The individual drums seem to be scattered all over the place. Seems like there's mud all over the place.

That said, I'm glad I listened to the whole thing! Mad skills on that guitar, dude.

poetic
thanks for listening and commenting.
mix is horrible.
ok.
LOL
so many people have listened to this, but no one else said the mix was horrible....
heheh..
but, so, i had to listen to what you said..
went back, and remixed it, the toms (which carry the beat) have been brought up, eq'd with more 'bite', and panned hard left and right...
all the guitar rhythms brought inward, just left and right of center, and all the feedback and solo and harmony guitar parts panned hard left and right....
lead vox, kick, bass, centered, and all background vox panned hard left and right.

this really made the mix better...... so i appreciate your candor! i'm digging it more now that i made the changes....
i've got it mixed, but not mastered yet.....

Definitely better, dude. The mix sounds much better. For some reason, I think either the bass is too loud, or there's a lot of low-end mud in the guitar tracks. Have you tamed the 300-400HZ freq? Sounds very bottom-heavy.

yeah, that's been done in the new version, but i have not posted that one yet.

the change in EQ and panning, as well as some judicious limiting on the bass buss, dialed that all in nicely.

i can post the new one, if you want to hear the diff........

alright jimmys69!

you and poetic, man, brave dudes......for coming in and commenting and all....
thanks!

thanks Al P
appreciate it!

man, i remember as a kid, i loved watching all the old scary flics, and then sneaking into the theatre with the older kids to watch whatever was the current horror flic....

i tried to make this one theatrical, but 'serious'.
the original wolfman movie, yea, that was pretty serious....

the coolest part of this mix, for me, was getting to record all the feedback guitar stuff.

it replaces what would/could have been a synth line...

i cranked my rig up really loud, and would fret certain notes, and just let them take off on their own, feeding back thru the amp....

sometimes they would go somewhere i hadn't planned...

the whole idea was, to let it do whatever it was going to do, and somehow, capture it and use it.

i have a lot of those tracks (i think 5 or 6 in all) and i blend them in and out of the mix here and there......

it was so loud and intense in the recording room at the time, i was afraid i was going to rip a speaker!!

but it made it feel like i had a tiger by the tail..

or a werewolf by the short hairs.
LOL
