Hands On Experience Using MC012's, B-1's, MK319's On Overheads

sorry guys, I know how much this subject and these brands get beaten to death around here..

I'm using MC012's for overs and for the most part I'm happy. however, If those of you with "actual" real world experience using these, could relay to me the differences I will find going from SC mics to LD on overs, (and if I go that direction) more iimportantly, how does the Mk319's differ from the B-1's in overhead applications. (what do you prefer?)

I remember someone said.........

that they liked using the 319's as OH's in situations where the cymbols were very bright or harsh because they have a darker (less hyped) high end.

In general, LD's will color a sound more than SD's.

Sorry though, I dont actually own either of those mics.

Bobalou, check out this thread on using LDC's for OH's.

The MK319's are excellent on OH's, but the B1's work really well - and plus you can use the B1's for many other applications as well.

Honestly, the MK319's are $100/pair at GC right now, and the B1's are only $79 each. You could get a pair of both and they would all get used in your studio.

But if you only want to get one pair and only use them on OH's, get the MK319's.

I have and use all of them. I like all of them. I use the Mk-012's as OH with the pad capsule on. I have used my Mk-319's but I find thet they seem brighter,to have a wider pattern(I get a lot of bleed) and with the roll-off switch and pad switched on the signal becomes significantly weak for OH. I love the 319's on floor toms and as vocal mics for an alto voice. This could just be the characteristic of these particular mics. I have noticed that there is a big difference in oktava mics.
The B1 isn't colored at all in my experience, both good and bad. I have only one of those and it is used a lot, but I didn't like it as an OH as much as I like the Mk-012's. This could just be my taste, in fact, yeah, it is.

A friend used the SP C4's as overheads when recording my kit once and they were great. A bit brighter than the Mk-012's.
 
I have had great luck with SP B-1's as overheads and for acoustic guitar.

Here is a sample or two.

(B-1's as overheads no tom mics, all Aardvark Q10 pres for whole song)

(B-1's as overheads, toms miked, and RNP for main preamp)

(Acoustic is B-1 and MXL603)

Hey beez,

that was real cool! the singer has a Tommy Shaw (styx) kinda thing going on to me (with the first two tunes).....the drums sound rock! what was your mic set up and room size for those drum tracks?...have you experimented yourself on small condensors verses LD's for overheads?..thanks for the links BTW!

due to the price right now i think i will take a shot with those MK319's I'll always find something to use them on I'm sure. plus I'll always have my MC012's in case I go back that way....I did think of picking up two more B-1's for the rest of my toms while I'm at it.....how do you like using LD's as overheads and LD's for toms simultaneously?..I've never tried that combo, will I be gettin a bit out of control with so many LD's?
