I see deaf people
what are the best sub $200 ones?

are these good for home studios..pros cons?

thanks :)

I use a shure sm-86 for a vocal mic in my p.a., but have never used it to record.....it's a bright and clear vocal mic and would probably work well for recording vocals, but I like to use a beyer ribbon (m-500) for recording.....afraid that the shure condenser could be too harsh....

Where did the clown go?
Vacation?:D

I don't know how "high-end" of a "handheld" you are lookin' for,..
but, I have one of these...http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-ECM-MS907-...314?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5fbdbde2

and it works EXCELLENT!!!
It was given to me on partial payment for a tattoo I did for someone.
I've used it on several different apps,...samplers, video cameras, cassette portastudios, portable and rack MD recorders, DAT recorders, and even tried sendin' it into my interface, and laptop soundcard...

This microphone surpassed any expectations I've had for it.
Super clear quality.
The only downside is the 1/8 inch connector, but you can get an adapter
for $2-$3.00.

thanks guys I look into both...

is a AT 2010 any good?

or does anyone have any experience with a PL84 or a DS-V9??

The 2010 is a decent mic. It uses the same capsule as the AT2020 but is of course a handheld mic. Could be a nice option considering you can get them for less than $100 often.

To me they just seem hyped it the upper mid and high end ranges ~ to be able to cut through the onslaught barrage of a rock bands stage volume.
Nice and squeaky clean and crystal transparency when just hanging around the shop testing them out before going out on the road with them.

For *new* in that price range- hands down-B.L.U.E. enCORE 300. For my money, I'd be looking for a used AKG C535EB. Here's an ebay "buy it now" for $129:

http://cgi.ebay.com/AKG-C-535-EB-CO...804?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f6eb08ec

It beats the hell out of a Beta87, etc.

And Moresound- there's nothing "squeaky" about either of the above mics, unless you've got a squeaky singer. Frankly, I wouldn't recommend condensers for live use with a band. They work best on a pop live sound stage, where you control the acoustics, and the singer is featured, a la American Idol, or for solo performance or small acoustic ensembles in smaller venues. They are the weapon of choice for many top folk artists. IMHO, the C535 is the best of the lot, short of a Neumann KMS104. I've never used the AT mic referenced above, but if it has the same capsule as an AT2020, that is not a particularly good omen. YMMV.-Richie

HA ..... Richard I guess it was just a poor choice of words.
It's just how they sound to me compared to say a .... beta 58, and for the life of me couldn't think of an other way at the time to describe that comparison.

Cool...$129 is definitely in my budget...

Its for recording stuff...I always hang onto a dynamic...there is something about having it in my hand and controlling its proximity that I just cant get used to with a typical condenser..Im hoping to experiment with one of these and see if I prefer it

I already speak to myself in the shower...I tell the wife its singing when she catches me so she doesnt think Im completely nuts...but I am, its all downhill from here :)
