I really like the features of the project mix, but have been hearing great things about the RME multiface. The dilemma i face is i like the features of the project mix, but do not want to sacrifice the sound quality of the rme. If anyone has experience with these units please respond and let me know the best way to go.
Thank You

There are 2 reasons for the ProjectMix. 1 you want a control surface, and 2 you want to use Pro Tools M-Powered. If those are not important to you, for about $50 more you can get a RME Fireface800 which will blow that thing away in terms of sound quality and performance. If you want the control surface and want to use M-Powered, the ProjectMix is for you.

Thank you very much for your time. I do not care much for pro tools, nothing against it, but i'm used to cubase sx 3 and ableton live, I would not be interested in learning a new daw. I am really looking best sound quality first, functions and features second. I was also thinking about doing 5.1 mixes in the future, not immediately but maybe a year or two and the multi would allow for that.
I didn't see many dedicated control surfaces around that would complement the fire or multi, any suggestions for this setup?
I was looking to spend up to $500 for the control surface.

Thanks

Virtually any control surface out there will work well with any of the RME products, or any professionally marketed soundcard for that matter. Much of this dependence is how well your application interfaces with the given control surface and your midi setup (since many will use midi). Personally, the Mackie controllers are very solid, widely used, and integrate as well or beter than most all other controllers out there. They are also expandable. They may be a little out of your price range, but you should be able to find a used one. The Behringer seems to work just fine as a controller, but it is a real pain to setup and configure. The Mackie is as easy as it gets. I have also found that the 01V96 digital mixer by yamaha works very well and very easily with Cubase SX. I am not sure if the original 01V does though.

Thank you Xstatic I was unwilling to use ebay but it looks like that may be the only way to go. I live in a small town and there is not a used market for products like that. Thanks again for info, i will be on the look out for a used mackie or 01v96.

I just bought another 01V. I know that the 01v96 that I have integrates nicely with DAW apps, but I am still not sure about the older (original version, non 96 version). The one I just bought was an older one for cheap rentals. I will try and test it later this weekend to see if it will work as a DAW controller. If so, they are pretty cheap used:)

I was looking on ebay it seems they only have about 4 01v's for now, but it will be a few months before I have the money for the soundcard and the control interface. I would like to know how well the 01v works, so when you get the chance let me know.
