I was to get off the combos and get up a bit more.
I don't make a lot of money, and there's tons of other things I want to buy. But priority wise to me really is I want a new amp...

I've been running around and found two half stacks that are more in my budget, and the two choices are:

and

I hear a lot of bad things about Crate though, but I wanted some better expierianced opinions on this.

or would this be a better choice:

I don't want to go over a thousand, especially right now. Either of them would basically do for now and coming years.

Music ranges from Clean undisorted rhythm and lead, to heavy distortion of rock and industial-esque sounds.

Right now I play off a tiny small Peavey combo, and a Fender Princeton Reverb.

Not really sure where to go, so any advice would be great, thanks!

If I was going to buy a half stack, I think I'd buy a Sov Tech. This is the best I can do for a link Click Here, you'll just have to call around to your local music stores and ask. They won't have them at guitar center or mars. You'll have to check with the little shops the price and the sound are worth the extra digging you'll have to do.

Cool checked it out, saw some interesting prices.

Anyone else have good suggestions, I don't want to limit my options to just the items I listed, so anything is appreciated.

I don't know anything about the Fender, but I know the Crate halfstack you mentioned above is really small, which may be a good thing, I don't know. Personally I think I would go for the Marshall. Those AVT heads aren't too bad for the money. I can't say anything about Sovtek because I've never played through one. All I know is that they're not too easy to find and the people that like them seem to like them a lot.

When you say industrial I'm guessing you're reffering to KMFDM/Ministry/NIN style music?

Another avenue you may want to explore is getting different components and making your own stack. You may be able to get a better rig for the same price. Also check out rigs with seperate preamps and power amps. I have a POD pro running through a power amp and straight to a 4x12 and I love it. It probably cost me about a Grand at Guitar Center out the door. (You gotta know how to talk 'em down) It gives me a wide range of sounds that a head couldn't come close to. And for Industrial music that is usually pretty important.

well, i have an old Crate stealth GT-50 head (50watt, 4 6v6 power amp tubes and 3 12ax7 preamp tubes) with a 4*12" crate cab (celestions). you can get these quite cheap (used, i don't think they make them anymore). as for the power amp option - most heads have an effects loop you can use to bypass the preamp, but IMHO, if you buy a "big" amp, try the more basic sounds first. i have a pod and a whole lot of other effects but i usually just plug the guitar to the amp with no effects between them (of course a footswitch is a good idea for this). i'd look for a used amp instead of buying one of the amps you linked to in your message... my Crate isn't exactly the best amp ever but it's sure good enough for me - 50watts - it's not too loud for practicing at home, but it can get loud enough for a gig easily.and the sound quailty is quite good actually if you know how to work with it.
Good luck with your search, tell us what you bought :)

What type of sound are you looking for. I picked up a Marshall AVT50H and a 4x12 and it's great for jazz/blues/classic rock. I got mine used for $600 and new they are $880 at Musicians Friend.

my advice is that you purchase none of the amps you mentioned.
the reason is ,is that I.M.E.O., solidstate =shit.
laney makes some very cool combo/stacks(combo with an ext. cab)i owned an ac 130? 30? and i cn tell you ,it did an ex. job on the heavy stuff.it was ok on the clean side, but just ok not great.
you may want to take a look at some combo amps.i paid 800 for my fender hot rod deville 2/12 and i have been well pleased with it.very good on theavy stuff ,great for blues and vintage sounds
and more volume than you will ever need.i cranked mine to 5 one time and it made me dizzy.(no shit)
whatever you do dont buy a solidstate because while they may sound good in your bedroom the minute you set up and start playing with a second guitarist that is using a tube amp you are going to regret wasting tour money.
sheppard

The Laney is a good amp. I keep one around for a backup. But, I think the Sov Tech sounds even better and it is also a tube amp.

Thanks for all the imput everyone, I'm looking into the Sov Tek stuff right now as I type this.

Anyone have any suggestions of what kinda cab I should get to go along with a sov tek head?

I've found some Sov Tek Mig 60 and Sov Tek Mig 100
I'm assuming it's just a watt difference, but are they as good or better than the Mig 50?

'Cause I do know in a lot of cases just 'cause it's newer or more in quanitity doesn't mean it's better overall.

Thanks for the input again, it's much appreciated!

_Mike
