ADD -- blessing and curse
Ok, here's what I want to do.

I've got a CD project I want to do in the future that will be half rock, half country (can the Donnie & Marie jokes... :) )
Anyway, how would someone market, promote, and classify that type of CD if they were to sell it? If I sold it on CDBaby (or whereever) how would I classify such a CD? I think CDBaby only allows you to select one classification.

The main thing is, how would I market/promote/classify it?

My CD at CDBaby is in two: Classical and Electronic.

My CD is with a small label. It's classical crossover, I guess it could be described as Classical fusion but its a CLASSICAL CD. It's been amusing and vexing to see the genres it is under on various sites:

I-tunes: New Age
Amazon: DJ and Dance
Europe: SOUL   :D
Tower: Classical

I want a crossover audience, but a CLASSICAL crossover one. Soul? That's just stupid.

You can pick whatever genre you like for places like CDBaby. Some of the ones listed as "Classical" have nothing to do with it, there are literally rap records under classical. Bottom line: it doesnt matter. YOU are responsible for getting people to CDBABY ( or anywhere else for that matter). You wont get much "walkby" traffic, people will know about your product through some other means ( myspace, your own website, word of mouth, etc).

You could always draw up the artwork and do it up in terms of an album (those black thins that you listen to with a thingy with a needle thingy). One "side" of each. Neil Young did that in his way, and that is how the first Drive By Truckers album is.

Well, since I'm going with a CD, it's gonna be a little different than that.

What I'm thinking of is half the insert is the photo of "rock singer" me, and the other half is the photo of "country singer" me. I even have a cool name for the album.

Although I think I get what you're saying...I could do one side of the jewel insert as "country" me, and the other side of it as "rock" me...that's not a bad suggestion...

Although I don't know if I want to alternate songs, or just do 5 and 5.

Yeah, that's what I meant. too much time at work to think straight.

I think its a very interesting idea, and that you may be able to spark some interest from the press by marketing it as a new and interesting concept album.

Half Country Half Rock....

Isn't that Alternative Country?
I'd probably classify it primarily as Alternative Country and then as Rock.

Try and see how people classify Uncle Tupelo and Wilco.

- my .02.

Well, I put together a mock-up album cover...bear in mind this is a future project.

It's basically two fonts, 1 "normal" (Arial) font, and one rock-ish looking font, a black background, and two separate images, desaturated so the images are black & white.

The rock side will be a combination of hard rock/metal/alternative rock, and the country side will probably be close to mainstream country.

I'm trying to figure out if I should go 1 rock, 1 country, etc. or do all the rock, then all the country, or all the country then all the rock...

The album name? How does "Alter Ego" sound?? I think it's cool for an album like this.
